What does it take?

This forum is for the general discussion of Anime Music Videos.

Arigatominas vid is actually one of the cases in which the title got my interest because it said fan-animated. It is a little bit unlucky exampel, because Ari is a well known editor with good reputation. But I'm sure I'd downloaded it too if an unknown editor had announced it.

dj_ultima_the_great wrote:What does it take for an unknown to get noticed? Is the indication of the anime and music in the title enough?

It depends. If I'm interested in it yes, other way not.

dj_ultima_the_great wrote:if most of you don't watch videos to anime you don't know, then can I assume that you read anime magazines or watch TV promos (or something of the like) in order to see new ones?

I watch anime if they are aired. I don't watch AMV with unknown anime for two reasons:
1.) I could spoiler me something, even if marked "non spoiler". Maybe the editor simply forgot?
2.) How should I judge on the vid? I don't know anything about the show, so can I really understand it? Do I get it into right context?

dj_ultima_the_great wrote:If I posted a video there, who would take a chance on me?

Maybe me? :D

If I would be in your place, I wouldn't mind it that much. Why not doing it how you like it? If you make a title and a post that you would read, that you would reply to, why shouldn't there be people out there who think the same?

dj_ultima_the_great wrote:The videos were both great and worth the download, but MXR got the shaft. To me, the only thing that made ari's video more popular was her status on the site.

Oi. It got a lot of posts, but that doesn't mean it was popular. It was flame-bait posted by someone who doesn't invite public flames. So it got funny responses instead.

What does it take for an unknown to get noticed? Is the indication of the anime and music in the title enough?

It takes a few friends and good skills - once the friends have posted raving about the video, others will click to see what's up and - if the skills are there - they'll remember the creator in the future. I think this is what happened with 'Whisper of the Beast'. Who actually had heard of the group before watching that video? The few people who originally posted. The rest of us responded to see what was going on.

As far as getting your name known, I did it the round-about way, giving reviews to new members religiously, responding to every new amv announcement just so I could find other 'newbs' like myself. After a while, those people started doing the same to my threads. If you're trying to get the attention of the old-timers, I think you need to participate in cons or follow their announcements so they'll remember your name and get curious about you.

As for new anime - I don't like watching new anime. I have a few editors I follow (off the forums) who have the magical ability of making me interested in anime I've never heard of. Aside from them, I don't go out of my way to find new anime. I've watched a lot of anime in my free review threads, and not one of them made me want to seek vids out for that anime. Take Eva, or Lain, or Bebop, or a dozen popular 'commonly known' anime - I've never seen any of them. But I've seen enough videos for them to know I'm not that interested. I'll watch an amv to an unknown anime if the creator asks me to, but I don't go out of my way for it.

Out of curiosity, my third point is this: who here, besides myself, is willing to take chances on new or unknown creators?

I am. I just don't have the motivation to try it these days. There's too many new people posting, I'd never keep up. If I can't do everything, I don't do anything. :?

If the topic has a catchy title.... like...

I'm writing that down and using it for my next Announcement thread.

....Guess I'll post. That shows you that it's important.

What DOES it take? Good question.

While I agree with some points here and there I'd like to point out my personal beef in finding a video worthy enough to blow my bandwidth limit on:

Video Comments: The problem with most video comments and even in the AMV Announcements is that they come off as incredibly pretentious. Why do I want to read about how "this is my <insert number> amv" and "this is my best work to date"? Of course I feel on the AMV Announcements board that it should just be enough for the editor to say what song and anime they used in the amv and say "thanks for taking the time to watch it". Another problem is with most video comments is that they tell what the editor is trying to say as SuperFusion pointed out. I'd much rather prefer the person watching the video to make their own damn mind on what the video, just takes the fun out of it if the editor just say "THIS IS THE POINT OF MY AMV". The final problem would be editors explaining the "making of" which pretty much what makes most video comments appear to long. If I was interesting in the history, how you did a certain effect or if I can give you a hang job then I'll email you. Otherwise, it's just a waste of space.

"If the creator has nothing interesting to say about the video, then it's likely that there's nothing interesting about the video."

I am guilty of that. What kind of bs is that? Just because an editor doesn't have much to say about the video does not translate into a bad amv all the time. What can a person really say about their amv that's interesting? Do people want a step by step process on how I did a certain effect? My struggles, my personal real life problem I had to overcome to make this video or do they want me to fucking hold their hand and tell them what the point of the video is? I think the viewer is better than that to deserve that type of bs.

"What does it take for an unknown to get noticed?"

Good question, but rather should they really care about being noticed? If they really care about amvs from being beyond a "hobby", they should just release it and not care what others think than expect a blowjob.

The whole silvermoon/sierra question could have been asked in a private message and I am surprised a person like you dj_ultima that has been on the org for a while hasn't found out their winning formula:

Newest and hippiest anime (Naruto) + Effects driven video = the win

or

Negative + Negative = Positive

For most braindead narutards anyway.

"Out of curiosity, my third point is this: who here, besides myself, is willing to take chances on new or unknown creators?"

Depends on my mood really. Do I want to take a chance on a video that has the potential to be somewhat decent (keyword) or do I really want to add another name to my hate list?

"If I posted a video there, who would take a chance on me?"

If you make a trailer and you're not DJ_Izumi, then you automatically win.

Back to my hole....

*I* as my original s/n was one of the firsts to discover Silver and Sierra! They were noobs once ~.~ I generally don't enter threads anymore, unless to mock, until the second page.

Knowname, seriously, that was the stupidest comment I've seen since the OT was abolished.

Let's see... I look for:
1. Editors I know are good and/or talk to regularly to semi-regularly.
2. Things that make me go "Eh? what's this?"
3. Does not include the words "Naruto" "InuYasha" or "DBZ" in the title anywhere (unless it's bashing one of them).
4. doesn't rely too heavily on the song's name.
5. Isn't just the name of the song, band, and anime used with "AMV" tacked on.
6. *Generally* if there are multiple AMVs denoted, I skip it.
7. If the name of a band I like is mentioned, I'll generally look into.
8. If there are a good number of replies, (about ten is a good benchmark).

If I see a title that appeals to my personal tastes (be it anime/artist/genre), I'll usually give it a quick look. Also, if it's worded in a way that's intriguing and piques my curiosity, I'm more inclined to read it. And, as others have said, if I happen to see a new one from an editor whose previous works I've enjoyed, I'll often check it out.

Man, we each make one Naruto video and now that's all we're seen as? Editors that just go with the latest craze? We just make whatever we feel like, seriously. Sometimes that includes lesser used anime, sometimes it doesn't. And we definitely have no such "winning formula". Don't you think that maybe our videos get good reviews instead because of the editing skills that we've developed over the years, and because of something called "effort" that we put into our videos?

Anyways, back on topic:
It's like everyone seems to think that it's futile for a video to get noticed or become popular if the creator is not very well known or if the anime is not Naruto/InuYasha/DBZ. It's not futile!! If your video is very well edited, it is going to get good reviews at some time or the other. It may take longer for them to come, but they will come. And how many replies you get in the announcements forum does not always indicate how popular your video is going to become. One video that I released got only two replies in the forums, and now it's my most popular video.

It takes a keg of beer, a team of dogs, a guy named Guido, and a stroke of good fortune.

... What were we talking about, again?

Also, I failed to add that if someone has "the great" or something similar in their name, I'm very likely to pass it off as undeserved arrogance until I'm told otherwise.
