Basics on making an AMV PLEASE! I am a total newbie.

Postby Fargren » Sat Aug 06, 2005 9:20 am

Ok, first of all, my native language is not english, so i am honestly sorry if this post is hard to read. Second, I'm not quite sure if this is the place to post this.
Well, I'll get started. I have never madean AMV, and I don't have the least minimum idea of how to sart, and I really want to make some(I have some ideas I think are pretty cool:D). I have no idea what programs to use, or how to use them. I have no experience whatsowever on editing any kind of video. I am TOTAL n00b.
Any kind of advice and/or link will be apreciated.

well, the site guides do assume some knowledge of editing, although http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/PhadeGuide/ may be most newbie friendly.

check http://amv.dwp.filetap.com/aboutstart.htm if you're completely new to editing.

I think that the very first step is to have a song or an anime (both preferably) you'd think would make a great AMV as to actually make it, you will be probably spending a lot of time reading and learning about new skills and programs and spending at least some money for an editing program. Without this, there really is no reason to start with the guides or anything.

I suggest that you do the following:
1. watch anime - can't make an AMV without it. As your watching it, make mental notes about the story, the plot lines, and the characters.

2. listen to music - the other part of an AMV. Don't look for a song to match to an anime, but just listen to music and let your mind wander (listening to music while showering helps me). As you're listening to the lyrics, see if your mind starts to match up anime scenes to the music. If it does, write them down and then go back and 'rewatch' the anime (either physically rewatch it or play it back in your head) to see if you think there is enough footage for your idea.

3. now, if you think that you've gotten a good anime / music pairing, now go to the guides and start reading them. Don't dive in and try and read it all as you'll just get confused and overwhelmed. Take it a section at a time and give it time to sink in. Once you think you've got it, go to the next section.

4. after this, you can now start doing research on what editing program you want to try. There is a good list of them in the guides and in the Video Help sections below. Other than your editor, most other programs you'll need are Free!

5. start editing! and if you need help, the forums are always available!

Stick with no effects or transitions for your first video. Don't be in a rush to complete it. Take your time and edit it until you feel its finished.

Their are people here woul could make a vid with wmm thats beter than anything you could so and do it in a fraction of the time. If you think that wmm is some sort of major restriction on ones ability to edit then your an idot.

Piracy is illegal. Sujesting that someone turns to theft and devoids hard working programers of money they rightfully deserve is nothing short of pathetic. If you pirate software, shut the hell up because we dont want to know about it.
