avid is a program for the hardcore group yeah its mostly used for very heavy editing and live editing for tv stations. funny part is actualy im going to study avid and premiere for about 3 years starting september at my new school... when i have gotten ahold of avid and actualy experianced it i can savely judge over it though from what i heard its basicly to complex for normal users and you actualy need to learn for it...

Hey I use Vegas Video, not for making amvs but for other things like Counter-Strike movies.. but I just don't get it.. the quality on the movies suck but still 5min of film takes about 1gig on my harddrive :S can some one pls help me?

but for amvs i wouldn't use anything except for Adobe premiere pro or Windows movie maker. ;)

That's probably the first time I've heard anyone prefer WMM to Vegas. Anyway, The tech guide can help you get the best quality out of your programs.

So what exactly can premier do that vegas cant? damn n00b

I don't think Ms. Dax is a noob, and she might be writing about Vegas Movie Studio (v4). But yeah, the full version of Vegas (v6) is easily equal to Premiere in most respects, including price.

also i heard first hand that vegas has timing isues.

And now you've heard first hand that Vegas has no timing issues.

well from what i heard jcd say is that vegas has a complexer timeline wich makes it harder to time compared to premiere making me pick premiere over vegas. i still have to check the program for myself though to confirm this so dont take it as a offence

People who aren't willing to figure out how to make a program work like you want to shouldn't use it to start with. Personally, I've NEVER used Premiere. At all. I've tried, but I couldn't get it to install properly. Well, moving right along, I'll just this... I've never had timing problems with Vegas. Nor have I had quality problems, that's PROBABLY your source footage (counterstrike records at lower framesizes, probably).

Big tip for Vegas... Scrub (slow) the video down while you're previewing it, and make sure you have the settings on Draf - preview in the preview box/window thingy. Makes it look like crap there, but it generally makes it playback a bit more smoothly.

I put 'em together in WMM, and then add digital effects/ clean up with Pinnacle Studio 9. Hooray for people who don't have enough money to buy Adobe Premiere! :D

Hey, no offence was taken. Just wanted to make the opposing viewpoint. I've been using Vegas for over four years and timing is just about the easiest part of the experience.

Tono_Fyr makes some good points, and I can add that it's possible in Vegas to turn off all effects during preview, or even turn off individual tracks. Either method can help when placing clips at the right points.

I'm a masochist and have never made an AMV before, so I'm going to do my entire first project in AviSynth.

Pro:
 • I don't need large lossless sources cluttering up my hard drive - I can rip the VOBs once, and work with them directly.
 • No timing issues: AssumeFPS is your friend
 • No colorspace issues: all of the functions are in YV12
Con:
 • Requires a great deal of planning - this project will be a nightmare if I take a directory full of clips and then decide on the theme/song. This is also a pro.
 • Would you want to do an entire project in AviSynth?

I just started today, but the idea has been rolling around for a while now. All I have finished are a bunch of "dummy clips" synched up to the audio. As I finish story-boarding and finding/massaging the video bits I want, the dummy clips will be replaced by real clips.

You can do more or less the same thing with Vegas and Premiere. Sure, you're using d2v files in both cases, but that doesn't make much difference in the end... and good luck with that. Hope you don't go insane.

I suppose another "pro" in the AviSynth catagory would be that I do not own either Vegas or Premiere ^_^

I'm a progammer at heart, so I'll end up spending all of my time writing AviSynth funtions to do effects and never finish the video.
