Thank you for realizing that. Too many think that what we do is easy and something that everyone will do perfectly the first time, but its not. Defenintally check out the guides for a lot of pointers on getting started, and the rest is up to you. Good luck man.

And please, please do your research and educate yourself about AMVs before you start trying to edit a video. You will be happier with the end result that way. If you want to make a good AMV, you can't be ignorant about them. That means researching how to get good quality out of your source, deciding for yourself what makes a video good or bad, and realizing what kind of work needs to go into making a well-edited video.

Technical knowledge, or artistic knowledge? If it's the first, check out Otohiko's links. It's a lot to take in, but don't get discouraged. If it's the second, then find some good videos and see what makes them good. The 'Recommended AMVs' forum is as good as any place to start, but once you've exhausted that it's time to search the forums. There are plenty of vids out there that have gotten good comments in the Announcements forum but haven't been mentioned around the forums.

True enough.

Alternatively, you may also want to read up on the general principles of visual design...
With AMV's, as everything else, the first thing is to know what you want to do/see in your videos. How you figure it out is up to you, but you need to think about it a bit more specifically than just "I want good effects so they're cool and original like [video title omitted]" :)

i thought it'd be important to point out that you can't learn everything from guides. you will learn a lot just by going into your video editing program and playing around with clips against some music. although the guides are meant to help you improve the quality of your videos, it isn't entirely necessary to read them before trying out editing. i mashed up clips from downloaded footage for my first vid without reading anything and, even though it looks like crud, i was happiest finishing that vid out of all my vids.

even though i am probably comming along and beating a dead horse with a stick, I agree with everyone in this forum post...

I found that after downloading, literally, thousands of vids what I think its exceptional, good, ok, and what is bad... researching other videos is a good place to start, but beware some members get agitated if you try to coppie their style (I personally dont care, but I have seen people get mad about things like that, even when credited)..

and to poke at that dead horse some more, do play with clips in your video editorer, its a good thing to do... I make little logos and "advertisements" for my site and what not with mine even now.. I of course would never upload them here, because the .org doesnt really need to see my short video clips, but its a fun way to familiarize yourself with the effects your editorer has to offer.

anyways good luck at your video making! and i hope your first one turns out good...

a friend of mine went to make her first vid thinking it was going to be easy and she lost interest 1/2 way through and didnt finish it till a month later... i think it turned out harder than she thaught...
