The opinion system.

I found a lot of people misunderstood really a lot this type of judging for other videos. Many people think (but many) that any video with scores down of the 9.80 on all the categories are unworthy even to be downloaded. Same for the creator that think that get something below the 8 is unfair! (this is exagerated but you understood) I saw that votes under the 9, or under the 8, are the hell and the trash for many creators. But an 8, isn't a score that many times in the school is a dream to follow with all your blood? Get an 8 in a school exam is something quite difficult. Here seems that everything below it is bad. Get a 6 is many times unbelievable, not to mention everything that is 5 or below. Six is sufficient, a seven is a proof that you done not good, more than in a good way that category and show that the effort you used is been judged. Get an 8, or even a 9, is a proof of a great proof of the quality that category reached in your/other people work. A 10, is perfection.

I don't know why I wrote this but I would know your opinions about this IF I'm been clear :)

Here in the USA, 60 or below (on a 100-point scale) is failing; 80 is about a C, which is supposed to mean "average" but is still looked down upon by many students. (And in my grade and high schools, it was 69 or below that was a failing grade.)

To really be considered outstanding (in most classes), you've got to get about a 93 or higher.

So that might explain some of what you've been seeing in opinion scores.

This is why I hate 10 point scales. Everybody remembers them from their school days, and that way you get a different distribution for each country or culture, and everybody's afraid to give 'failing' grades. In the Netherlands 5.5 is the minimum passing grade, 7 is about average, 8 and 9 make your parents proud, and if you get a 10 your grandmother hears about it. So the same opinion from a European or an American will result in wildly different grades. In this respect a 5 point scale (like the stars) is much more honest. A little late to change the opinion system though. :) Maybe there's some kind of statistically correct weighing system based on demographics that could smooth the opinions a bit (I think imdb uses this).

I suppose the lesson here is to only exchange ops with Americans.

Maybe I've been judging videos too harshly then, since here the minimum to pass is 4.25. :P

Hrm. . . I'm not opposed to downloading AMVs that have 8's or 7's in there average because I don't think they're not good or unworthy in anyways, it's just that my situation (and the situation of a good many people on this site, most likely) is having a slow dial-up connection. When you have to have your phoneline blocked for hours to download a 3 minute AMV you kind of get selective on what you choose to download and of course you want to download *the* best statistically, if you have nothing else to go on (if you're new to the creator or anime or what not).

Also, as for the whole grading scale, I don't ever aspire to get 8's/80%s. I got one B last semester and I cried. Sure I give 8's, but when I get them myself I find it disappointing, yet see it as a motivater to improve on that particular aspect of AMV making (IE a while back I had low capture quality and lip synch averages so I worked really hard on those and brought them up). . . So really the opinion averages aren't just for the viewers, but for the creators. . .. What that gets around to is that I think a lot of creators who have high opinion averages have them because they earned them--- teachers give A's to students who work hard, opinion-leaves leave good scores where they feel they're deserved. Yes there are a lot of "all 10s I luff you" reviewers, but I'm sure that most of you know that for everyone one of those reviews there's a bad one as well.

Opinions are subjective. Even technical things like audio and capture can look and sound different on different systems and in different players. Some people are strict graders, some aren't. But I think if a creator is striving for 8s they aren't very ambitious. No shame in an 8 but you should always be shooting for better. . .

I don't know if anything I said mades sense, but the point is that a 6 is like a slap in the face and anything below a five is different degrees of how hard one can be kicked in the nuts. Scores like those should be a rude awakening to creators to do a bit better the next time around so that they do get lots of downloads and opinions. My first vid sucked and got lots of 7s like it deserved, piece of crap that it was, the bad scores (partially) exist so the newbs can be told to wake up and smell the coffee.

But 8's I never viewed as bad, I mean the global averages are all 8.somethings, so really it's no big deal, I suppose.

I was ignorant of the fact that the scales were different from country to country. This is sincerely something new. Here in italy the minimum to pass is 6. Below that you are not sufficent, so is better to kill yourself, or well your parents will do :) :P Thanks for the comments anyway :D

If you think the scoring is a problem (as quite a few people do) your best bet is to give opinion scores out on the scale you feel comfortable with. My opinion averages are far below the site average because the videos i give opinions to (often decided at random) deserve scores (IMHO) less than the "average" of 8 and often less than 5 in some categories. The more people that give opinions using both sies of the scale (1-5 and 6-10) when they are warented, the more true the grades become.

It's all inflation. I've had many, many arguments with my friends over this. Many of them are absolutely convinced that on a ten-point scale, eight is the average.

While I could go into depth on the theory and social implications in this, that's far too much work. Suffice it to say that comments mean much more in opinions than the numbers. And while it sucks that people are going to decide whether or not to judge your video on its opinion scores, you'll have to live it with. Chances are, people who judge like that are superficial, silly fucks that don't deserve to watch it anyway.

I've actually come to learn that the majority of the time a video that has very high 9's for an average is probably an overrated naruto piece of shit. So I'm more likely to download something in the 8's than the high 9's anymore. At least I'm fairly sure the 8 rated one was probably rated honestly and still managed to get an above average score.

I perfectly undestand this comment. Many times I found videos to op that in some categories would deserve points that go less of the 6, that in my scale means "sufficent work, approved". But with this way to think is everything more complicated, I know some friends that actually judge videos honestly and get flamed for this. Flamed, I find this incredible! Nowadays I found people judge opinions as "A way to get famous and to go on the tops", and not as "An opinion". Of course I love to get many opinions, this give me proudness, but even a 3 give proudness to me sometimes if it have sense.

I tend to only download high rated videos, particularly because I'm on 56k and the average video takes me a good three to five hours (I get about 18MB an hour)...

But then, I've noticed that all most of the videos I've downloaded in the last month were VERY high rated and they sucked. Terribly. It's annoying.

Well, for me, if it's a well known anime/ sing, I will generally shoot for higher scores. the more obscure the anime/song is, the more lieniant I am about judging the AMV before I download it. I also especially look at the description the creator puts out when downloading. if it's not at least a small paragraph, unless it's on the to 10% list, I rarely look at it. a creator has to have some pride in his work for me to be able to appreaciate it.

I also look at the number of downloads and the number of opinions given. generally any AMV that doesn't have an op I don't look at unless it's the only one of it's genre/anime/song.

So I'd have to say, while the rating system is useful, there are other ways to judge an AMV before downloading it that give you a better sense of what it could be.

(and btw, I am in the US, but when I give out ops, usually 6 or below is bad for me, while 7 is average, and 8 is above average. I think it's because I round down... :?)

 I'm the other way around... I hate ppl that just can't shut up about their work! I mean what good is background info, tools used and stuff gonna do me! More often then not, none, whatsoever except a waste of my time and a few extra strokes to get to the download button at the bottom -_-. I'm not saying if you got a short, funny little story or won awards don't put it, just I shouldn't feel like I HAVE to do that since there's no point to it. I guess it just takes all types  .

especially when they post LYRICS!! Boy that chaps my hide (it makes the strokes rough  ). I mean I'd rather ppl be more SELECTIVE about what songs they use rather than try to convince the viewer of they're insanity. Some songs JUST AREN'T GOOD AMV CANDIDATES! Good song + good anime does not always make a good amv. Call me lazy but I don't want to spend 10 minutes while the car salesman trys to convince me that I like his car! It's just not fun.
