how long is too long

This forum is for the general discussion of Anime Music Videos.

I'll agree with dokool on this one; very few single-editor videos over six minutes have managed to hold my attention. And of those, I can think of only one that could not have told its story in a lesser amount of time by trimming the audio and removing the filler clips. I've seen a healthy amount of videos wear out their welcome at conventions because they just dragged on instead of ending in a timely manner. So yes, while it is certainly possible to make a video of that length by oneself, the question is, is it necessary ? Music videos can become tedious to watch after a certain stretch of time, and I can guarantee you most folks here can think of at least one video they know that they seldom rewatch because of its length. Unless you're looking for that type of reaction, you'd benefit from trimming your audio and tightening your concept.

In the end, it all depends on how good you are and how much planing you make. If you cant pull of an amazing 4 minute video then theirs no chance you'l be able to do a good video thats twise that length. Thats kinda why I like my vids to hang around 3-4 minutes. It makes planing easier and editing less frustrating. Also, if the music drags on in certian places, give it a little chop.

its all in how well the video is put together...

take a video such as sewwa's dirge for november, which clocks in at 8:10, or Wonka's die for me which is 8:35, they are both very well edited and the time goes by easily without a loss of focus. its all in the presentation for me.

For someone who hasnt made a single amv yet, stick with something under 4 minutes. No offence, but as your new to amv'ing you dont have a hope of geting someone to even watch a vid of yours that streches for 12 minutes.

I see what you're saying when using a trance song. It takes time to climax but when it does, it's pretty awesome. I personally think only fans of that genre would be able to truly appreciate the musical side of (me being one of them) though. Others that can't connect would get bored unless the editing was top notch and changed things up like dokool stated.

I've been listening to trance mixes lately while driving and can see making AMVs to them but it would also last at least 8-10 minutes for many of the ones I would choose. As a viewer, my attention rarely reaches pasts the 5 minute mark.

One of the best (hard) trance AMVs I have seen was the DBZ Doomrider project and it kept my attention because I love the song Sandstorm and am a fan of DBZ (go ahead and flame ). Even then, it tested the limits of my attention.

If you can manage to tell a story while changing style throughout the song, you might be able to get away with it but as a first AMV, I think it would be really challenging. Good luck in any case.

A 10-12 minutes long video MUST be entertaining as an episode. And IMO must NOT be any rock or fast music. For do not destroy a human brain a video like that must be with some trance (yoga?) Music, within a really smart editing.. To not be boring.. There's the must of a storyline.

I disagree with definitively excluding rock or fast music. However, I think I know why you say that though. Rock songs can usually tell a story within a short time frame. There are only so many words that can be used to tell the story. Fast songs in general that do not change tempos or melodies can become repetitive too quickly. Trance can certainly fall under that trap as well but it generally embodies soundscaping elements of New Age/Instrumental music with quicker beats used in techno (at least from the trance music that I like to listen to).

I have never heard of music that can be so uplifting, and only feel as if it only gets better as it progresses, that is until around 1998 when I started to listen to trance. Things can get innovative here just like it did in music. Was it necessary for people to try to take music up a level when it was fine as it is? I don't see why you have to question it, and trying to tell someone it's not going to work DOESN'T mean it's not going to work. In the history of ideas there have been things that were considered as bad ideas that turned out to be good ideas, and good ideas that turned out to be horrible ideas. You got to keep an open mind and not jump to conclusions, and experiment a bit with different ideas and sometimes you never know, it just may end up turning into a good idea. Just look at all the new and great innovative music that has been coming out in the last few years. I see amvs nowadays that are nothing like what you would see a year ago, it's just mind blowing some of them.

Also about tightening your concept, I don't see the point your trying to make. If a song with a GREAT concept be over 8 minutes long I don't see how you could even think to say you should just compress a video as much as possible. F that! Man who ever thought a story could last over 140 episodes and not die out. Well it has, and it's only has happened in the last year. If you could give me any other examples I will be surprised. Like they say quality over quantity, but I prefer Great Quality and huge Quantity!

Music != video. What works with one does not necessarily work with the other, this is a fact of life.

As far as your other evidence, Naruto didn't get to 140+ episodes with a metric assload of filler and recap. You could easily compress everything so far down to <100 episodes.

Do you even know what you're arguing for/against at this point?

Soap operas do 260+ episodes/year, doesn't mean that it's quality.

And yes, you just find the need to play some sort of counter game with me. This is a serious discussion for me so I want to discuss my point of view of the matter, not facts. Those who act like there just spewing out facts, and not opinions just have there head up there ass.

I see a lot of potential in music videos since they give off the same emotions that the music does, and sometimes adding or taking away from it. So I put them in the same category for that reason, and that's why I'm mixing my analogies with them. Ever seen Naruto's Technique Beat? I've seen that video over ten times, and each time it gave me that chill/tingling feeling you get when you are really getting into something. Without the video, the audio wouldn't be able to do that to me. Now knowing that video can add to the over all feeling of a song, I feel those songs that give me that same exact feeling that are over 8 minutes long could give me even more enjoyment, as long as it's executed well.
