How do you find quality amvs?

Postby -Cye- » Sat Jul 02, 2005 11:50 am

I'm definitely not what I would call "in touch" with the amv community, so I'm wondering what is the most reliable way to find quality videos. I've tried using the top 10% scale, I've tried looking at the star count, or the number of ops, but none of these seem to be that reliable for finding quality videos. I've looked at contest winners (usually fairly good, but not that many great action videos) and I know a few creators I really like, but I'm wondering if there is some way that other people use that I'm not aware of. Do you generally watch amvs only from people you know or is there a way you find quality videos from unknown creators?

I'm looking for mainly action vids, preferabbly not completely effect-ridden and with some semblance of a point, but even pointless action will do. But it just seems like I've been dl'ing so many really bad amvs that I'm getting discouraged. Anyway, just wondering.

Look at the viewers choice award winners and nominees. Lots of good vids in there. Also you might check out the AMV Announcements forum from time to time. Threads with a large number of posts usually indicate a good video.

I've gotten to the point that I basically just go off of the Video Announcements forum, even liklier if I know the creator's previous work and enjoyed those.

When I first joined nearly 3 years ago, I just browsed around for song/anime combinations I wanted to see, or either the song or anime seperately. For the most part, videos in MPEG-1/2, AVI, or MKV will be better quality (editing-wise, and possibly compression-wise) than the mounds of WMVs. That's not to say that there aren't good videos that were released in WMV, but the number of those are drastically small.

The <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=41">recommended AMV</a> forum may be useful, specifically <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=46893">this</a> thread.

Good luck finding an action video not completely effect ridden. I'm not sure that exists anymore.

Try people's Favorite AMVs lists.

Also try searching for songs you like and want to see videos to. Works for me a lot of the time.

Hey, I was gonna make thread like this. I'm having trouble finding good amvs as well. I'm just left browsing the amv annoucement forum for older threads, and stalking peoples profiles for there top 10 vids. Which can be annoying at times, cause people constantly mention the same vids over and over.

The opinion exchange forum is a bit of mess. People not putting direct links to the vids, and even recomending the same vid twice in a thread.

You guys aren't bad, some quality vids. Appetite for Dynamite was a good vid. I like Fluxmeister a lot (who doesn't) and I loved Eric from Otaku Vengenace when he was around. Other than that I haven't seen a whole lot of creators that really do much for me. Any other recommendations?

I was also going to ask another question, thought about posting another thread but I guess I could ask it here. I'm thinking about entering my newest amv in some contests, but I really have no idea what "contest quality" is. Do you need a really AMAZING video to enter contests or are there lots of entries but only the really amazing win? I mean I feel like a lot of the videos I watch are not that stellar but they get a lot of fanfare, so I'm unsure whether it's pointless or worthwhile to enter some contests. It's not a big deal if I win or not, but it would be cool to get a video shown somewhere.

It really does depend on which contest you're talking about.

Some (usually at the smaller cons) show everything that's submitted, as long as they're not disqualified for not following the rules.

The bigger conventions, which get tons of entries every year, usually have some sort of screening process to determine a set of finalists, which are then shown during the contest screenings. Otakon also shows the submitted videos that didn't make the finals in a different set of showings, so everyone gets their video shown at some point. Don't know about other large cons.

The exception to all this is Anime Weekend Atlanta, with its three separate contests and different rules for each. I know they promise to play at least one video by each creator who submits to the Exposition, but I don't know about the Professional and Masters contests and how they're handled when the con rolls around.

Oh yeah, and my personal advice:

If you feel you have a good video and you want people to see it, then by all means, send it somewhere! I sent my <s>third</s> <s>second</s> first video to Otakon 2003 because I figured I had nothing to lose, and it ended up making the finals. :)

Just don't send any one video to too many places, especially if you're not going to be in attendance. People generally frown on that.
Some cons have rules that disqualify any video that won an award at some other con prior to its submission; some cons have rules that disqualify any video that had even been <i>shown</i> anywhere prior to its submission.

You can also check out http://www.amv-contest-lists.org to see what the winners of past contests were like.

After watching some contests I've delevoped that the usual definition people use for 'contest quality' is 'pure crap'. The very few entires that don't follow that definition tend to be the winners for some strange reason.

Well, you can always help out by rating the videos you believe are not quality on the top 10% list. I think a lot of people are afraid to call out a video that has so many positive reviews when they believe it really sucks and that attidude works against the whole idea of the list being the very best videos the org has to offer.
