Would this be more distracting than helpful??

True that. You want viewers to be watching the screen not reading line after line. But if you must, go for mkv.

If you're stressed, make one of each, show some of the people that you actually respect in terms of opinion and see what kind of feedback you get.

If your video is solid, then the translations don't matter anyway since the internal story and structure will hold it together.

Dude. If you put an AMV into Pro at AWA and it had subtitles, that shit wouldn't make it. Seriously.

Let me clear that up - two my videos have title screens, not subtitles. I'm a big supporter of these, but the intention there is explicitly to focus the viewer on the text. Which is why I prefer to put them on blank screens or scenic backgrounds if I can.
Text, by its tendency of carrying very obvious meaning, is a big eye-catcher. Unless you're explicitly trying to focus the viewer on the text, subs are usually not a good idea.
IMHO, anyway...

1. A2L, these are the kinds of decisions you should make by yourself and for yourself.
2. Unless you're dedicating this video to someone specific, only make your videos for you and no one else.
3. As long you like your own videos, you're under no obligation to give a shit what others think. It's your video, so whatever you say goes. (In other words; you do whatever the fuck you want to to do and don't let me or anyone else stop you.)

hehe well you all bring up good points... it's like either go for it or dont kind of thing I guess.

I'm still torn... but I like the idea of maybe adding them at the end....

for the above poster... I know what you're saying but the song is beautiful as it is, and I posted the translation on other forum and all the other people who were fans of that song said realizing what it was about and how it was formatted was practically a tear jerker. It was for me, I was listening to song and then read the translation and that's what gave me the idea to make this vid since it was so moving...

but I do realize that adding subs can distract even ifthey're meant to accent. I may just take some of your guys' advice and add them on the end... well..i'll ponder it and i won't be making for a while still.. I guess I'll post my decision by uploading the vid when it's done.

Thanks guys!

For an exampe of song translated subs that arn't too destracting and look pretty, Look at Shine@G2's Recollection. AMV version.

However, if this is ment to be a powerfull emotional peice where attention is ment to be explicitly on the imagery, I would also suggest NOT including the subs, and just go with a song translation in the vid description, or maybe in the credits of the video. Or just release 2 versions, if you have the hosting to host one as a Direct link.

I say, don't. I absolutly dislike subtitles: they're so present, if you know what I mean. Besides, I don't think anyone will have any trouble with a foreign song (for me, all English songs are in fact foreign, think about it  :D ) There are plenty of Japanese and German song out here, and nobody complains about it.

And if you really feel that the translation adds to the AMV, you can post it with the comments. If people are interested, they can read it. If not, it doesn't affect the AMV.
