Recently I've been trying to cram as many different ways of saying 'your video sucks' as I can in ops. I used to not leave those types of ops but what can I say, I've noticed a re-occuring element to most videos I see.

When I take ops seriously I do a catagory by catagory breakdown. I find everything I have to say is covered under one of the catagories and since I tend to be below average (why the fuck is an 8 average given below the sites average anyway?) I find it helps avoid complaints if I explain each score.

for the good and bad sections I usually general good and bad things (it helps up my usefulness score)

Good - things/choices i really liked, or other random good things

Bad - things that need improvement (usually things like subs/ logos or bad timing... depending on the video though)

and in General I go for the score thing -

Warning that my opinions tend to be long, general crap about the vid, i blah blah too much and on with the opinion:

Originality - # - some comment about the concept, how many times i have seen it, if i have done it, that alot of times originality isnt all that great and doesnt matter, comments about how many FFIX vids there are... DBZ must die... ect... *ahem* lets talk about how weather or not i have heard the song before... linkin park?? die! lol (i like linkin park just too over done duh)

Visual - # - usually based on weather or not i can see it blown up to full screen, if its blocky, blobby, subs and logos will knock down a score for me... often times (though i am sure its probably uhhh i donno... not really welcomed cept by the creator of the vid) i will leave the link to the subs/logo removal guide, and tell them my personal experiences reguarding subs and how annoying it is to hear 15-20 times that the video was good, and that the visual could have been better and subs are bad... and warn them that if they are looking for opinions that the same thing will happen to them, so its best to atleast follow the guide and atleast remove the subs.

Sound - # - usually based on weather or not i can hear the lyrics, if its a hard rock song that sometimes i disreguard this... if i know the song really well and i know its supposed to sound a certain way, or if it sounds like the back up singers are louder than the main singer then i will comment on that... WMM used to add popping sounds into my vids, so i grade based on that as well, crackling, opening and closing of AIM sounds, and the biggest killer bitrating.... that creepy metalic digital streaming sound, will usually comment on that...

Action Sync / Editing - # - this is usually my longest part unless i really cant think of anything or the editing was really seamless if its a "n00b vid" or one that has really long sequences i point them out and tell them that it might look cool at first but i have gotten a negative response on dropping in big chunks... either way i will usually go into detail breaking the video down by seconds if i feel the need
EX: "0:00-0:30 - blah blah blah i liked this but this didnt work"
and go through the entire vid doing this... i usually point out lyric sync, what synced and what didnt (unless its an action vid then i usually throw the lyric sync out the door) and if i know a series really well i will tell them what worked and what didnt... (especially if a lyric sync comes up as disturbing)

lipsync - # - heh.... i usually dont grade this one, because i suck at it... but sometimes i do if its really well, and sometimes i do if it really sucked... i usually explain that my lipsync sucks so i canna give them any tips... just say its hard, and i suck at it lol.

Digital Effects - # - also one that i sometimes dont grade if its just a few overlays or whatever, or black flashes or white flashes since those some people consider effects... if they used an effect i hate (the Rainbow Filter on WMM??) i usually point it out weather or not it was used effectively or if like the rest of the universe they messed up their vid using it, and i will tell them how much i hate it... if transitions were good i will point out that they were good, if they were good but ill timed i will point that out as well.... ect..

Effort - # - most people get a high score here, though i am starting to rethink this strategy.... i used to think "well they got so far as to actually make a vid and that takes effort in my opinion" but it seems with the WMM boom and reading things in Vid descriptions "i always wanted to make a vid and didnt think i could till i realized i had editing software on my computer already... der der der...." so yea... anyways... i usually re-hash where they would have had a higher score due to something like subs, or something else or whatever.... and yea... sometimes i have alot to say here sometimes i dont.

Overall - # - this is usually a round figure of what i think all the other scores avarage out to in my head... and i usually just rehash everything else i already typed about.

Review - # - usually explain my scores, this is usually the one place i score the lowest as most vids i will either never watch again (though i give them 5-6s for that) and some i can see myself watching every now and again, or atleast felt the need to burn to CD (7-8) and then theres the ones I will keep on my computer or will have reason to watch all the time (9-10) and yea... i donno i usually find some bull to chit chat about... here...

i will then usually leave another paragraph about the vid, what i generally thaught of it, and wish them a good day or something...

ttyl
~Katie
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
and sometimes after the owner of the vid has commented i will come back and type more in response to their comment here.... if i have something to say here that is...
and thats about it.
Code: Select all
(map (lambda (x) (cons x (+ 1 (random 10)))) grading-criteria)
I then actually attempt to write sensical comments. You know, the stuff that actually matters.
I haven't done this in something like two years, though, so I'm not sure if I should even be posting in this thread.
Long rants without any sense and always over 2 months late
...what I do is I simply tell in good and bad sections what I liked and what I didn't.. with time (1:46) included if needed.
In general section I have built a habit of telling how and why the score was what it was in every aspect.
My 'full' opping style, which I actually have not used in well over a year (due to lack of interest, and I would really only pull it out when I felt such detail was required or requested), would be as follows:
First, the good and the bad are used for general remarks on the good/bad points of the video in brief. Or not brief. The General, ironically, is where I would get into specifics.
I always start my ops with my first positive impression in "the Good". Even if my first impression was not positive, I'll name the first positive one of it that I had - I'm yet to see a video where I didn't see anything positive.
In the General, the big sections I rarely pull out nowadays would be the timing breakdown (a scene-by-scene analysis, essentially) and a marking breakdown (justifying each of the marks I gave in all categories). Then I would finish up the op with 1) a one-sentence summary of what I thought of the vid; and 2) some words of encouragement or advice to the author on future work.
***
Lately though, I've been writing shorter ops which use smaller variations of this style, generally omitting the timing and mark breakdowns, or only including short traces of them in "good" and "bad".
Same As Ultima
Well, for starters, my opinions tend to run around 1000 words. Then, I do it like this:
"Good Points:
See General Comments.
Bad Points:
See General Comments.
General Comments:
Before I begin, I'd like to make the following comments, which IN NO WAY impact on your scores (except Re-viewable). 1. <some comment about the anime or game - whether I like it or not.> 2. <some comment about the song - whether I like it or not.> 3. Anyway, onto the review!
Originality - score #
-----------------------------
- comments on use (or overuse) of anime, song, concept
Capture/Output Quality - # -
----------------------------------
comments
Sound Quality - #
--------------------------
- comments
Action/Editing Sync -
--------------------------
# - my most important category. I divide it into mood sync and beat sync. So, even if one half of the equation was crap, I may still score decently if I think the other half was good.
Lip Sync - #
------------------------
- comments, if it's even in the video. If so, I drop points for extra or not enough mouth movements. Also, I drop points for mouth movements if they are not synched to anything in a video with lip. If there is no lip in the video, I could care less if the mouths are moving.
Digital Effects - # -
--------------------------
comments (if they're even in the video)
Effort - #
--------------------------------
- a category I hate, because no one really knows how much effort another put in. I usually look to the video description for this score. If they seemed excited about the idea and the product was halfway decent, I usually give a good score.
Overall - #
------------------------------
- my general idea of the video. Rehash of the few improvements I think it could use and what was done well.
Re-viewable - #
--------------------------
- an eight here is a ten in any other category for me. The comments that I make in the beginning of the opinion sometimes come into play here also.
<paragraph detailing my thoughts on the person as a creator - where I think he/she is going, if he/she seems to be improving. A general thought on the video. Sometimes, a funny comment about how jealous I am of his/her great work or idea.> Anyway...
As always, Farewell, Good Luck, and Happy AMV-ing!
PS: <sometimes a comment on the filesize, or a random, amusing comment>"
I'm already on the most useful list, slightly above you actually. I don't like cutting and pasting though, I prefer to make original insults for the video rather than relying on stock insults.
I've gone through a few variations. Since my last 'vacation' from writing ops I've started a new variation that's like this -
Good:
-general things I liked
-my favorite scenes, editing tricks/effects/scene choices I liked, following the order in which they appear with time stamps where possible (for wmvs I usually go "about 1:32" and "around 1:51" since I can't pause precisely)
Bad:
-general bad things that stood out, technical issues, biases I may have against the source material and/or theme
-scenes I didn't like, editing errors that looked bad, following the order of the video with time stamps where possible
General:
General Breakdown:
Originality:
-Have I seen it before? Why the combination, theme, editing approach, style, is or is not 'new' to me. What makes it stand out (there's always something since no two editors are exactly alike)
Capture Quality:
-what's wrong, where it looks worst, and how you can fix it
and/or
-what's great, why I think it's great (my familiarity/unfamiliarity with the source), and how droolingly happy I am with the pretty footage
Sound Quality:
-Any fuzz or pops or obvious problems? No? Then "No complaints here". Yes? Then here's how you can fix it.
Action/Editing Sync:
Lip/Effects:
Effort:
Reviewable:
-general comments on why the score is what it is, what would have made the score higher, and why the score isn't lower (usually with a reference to the 'good' and 'bad' details mentioned above)
Overall:
-"Things to improve?" A brief recap of the biggest problems and suggestions on how to fix them.
and/or
-a quick recap of why the vid is perfect in every way and "couldn't be better"
"/" - Some brief comment particular to the vid, usually given only to vids I'm reviewing for 'free op' threads, in response to what the person posted when he asked for feedback. This section doesn't exist for general reviews.
