How do you deal with long instrumentals?

Postby O Sliggity Slice » Tue Jun 14, 2005 2:41 am

Without having to cut them down? I've got a line on a good song that has a 1:40 second long breakdown at the end and am not all that sure about what kind of footage is good for instrumentals in an offbeat romantic video.

Well, first of all, explain what you're trying to do.

Generally speaking, there's quite a bit of freedom in terms of scene selection in instrumentals, because there's no lyrics to sync to - so for me, it's always been rather a matter of establishing an athmosphere/mood for a certain segment and going with that.

Offbeat romantic video... doesn't sound like a big problem, you can always just break away from the characters temporarily and go show some sceneryor action or something (again, I don't know what exactly you're up to). If all else fails, random neat-looking footage in good sync is your friend.

I'd make it the centerpiece of my video. All the scenes, imagery, and feelings that words can't describe - that's where they really get the chance to show.

I've worked with short and long instrumentals all the time in my new and old amvs.

Just DEW IT... You don't have lyrics to guide / restrict you so just use scenes that seem to 'hit' on the beat of the music.

Feel the Rhythm is probably my best example of how to use 'long' lyricless sections of a song. Just check it? ^_^

"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)

BAND scenes!

Oh, wait, that's just me. Since I am using an anime for this latest vid where regular characters have musical talent.

If you can't figure out a simple task like synching AUDIO with VIDEO, why are you editing?

I can figure them out just fine, its just that I've never had to deal with a long instrumental like this. Also, blow yourself.

Sorry, you're not gonna be finding any miracle solutions here. Unless your instrumental is full enough to easily synch... or unless you got a story/concept for your whole video to cover that instrumental, just cut the damn thing.

It would be easier to help if you were to provide the name of the song.

I only find instrumentals a problem when they are extremely repetitive. If it is a 1:40 of repetition it should be easy to clip most of the section away. I have to say this because it annoys me greatly, “Do not simply put in filler clips for a 1:40.” You are likely to kill whatever momentum the video had. I’ve seen way to many videos that died as soon as the lyrics died, that’s nothing more than one dimensional editing.

That's a good way of putting it. To much of this site is focused on lyric synching (IMO) which is not a bad thing it just often used to the detriment of plot/concept and mood.

As for your section there many diferent things that you can do, try experimenting with a side story. Instrumental sections give you much more freedom. See if this gives you any ideas: http://www.amvwiki.org/index.php/AMV_theory#Synch
