I mean, look at Otakon 2003, where "Glory of Love", "The Need For Speed" (which, significantly for the purpose of this discussion, beat VicBond's AE-fest "Die Another Day"), "Searching", and "Lollipops, Sunshine, and rrrRRRrrr" were winners, and none of them used many effects at all.
At Otakon 2004, we had "Waiting For You", "AMV Hell" (beat my own "AEO:EB", again relevant), and "End of All Hope" as winners; same deal.

I don't think there's much of a general concensus myself. I do think that there's the illusion of there being one oftentimes.

I am insulted to see you not acknowledging the countless hours I spent in After Effects *creating* all those cross-dissolves in each of those videos. Frame-by-frame with meticulous care.

...I actually have a few effects in my video this year for Otakon so perhaps that in itself is a bad sign

When Sammy updates his journal.

Someone needs to screencap them and make it into a video.

When videos hit emotionally, and lyric sync is always impressive, too.
