How the anime flows to the music. Video sync and some lyrical sync. Some AMVs can still be good even if the sound and video quality are horrid, so that's not much of a big deal to me. Personaly I don't really give a shit if there are subtitles, if the DviX logo is on the screen, if there are special effects, if someone used downloaded footage or not, or even if it's half full screen or half wide screen.

As long as it fits the song it's made to and the anime flows well to the music; to me a good AMV is a good AMV regardless of how it's made.

Hilarious, sarcastic responses to a valid question. Impressive stuff right there.

x2

Though I'm also quite fond of 'cut-outs' - I guess that's the 'super-imposed' thing in tech terms. It's just neat to see. I wouldn't say impressed unless it's done for an entire video like Castor's crossover vids. Good crossovers with lots and lots of cut-outs impress me. ^_^

Lots of other editing things I like or appreciate or prefer. I'm only impressed if it's something I wish I could do. I don't wish for much.

Originality. When someone makes me wish I could have come up with their style/idea/editing I get impressed.

Failing that, I frequently get impressed by how some people can give obviously terrible videos all 10 ops just because it's only the 20,000 vid to use their favorite anime. I don't consider that a good thing but it does definately leave an impression with me.

I'm impressed by videos where the song and the anime flow together so you can't really tell which one was made for the other. To do this, there are so many small things that have to match; not just the action/lyric synch but the amount of effects and the emotional overtones. The best example of this I can think of is Kevin Caldwell's "Believe", which still impresses the heck out of me.

Also, I'm a sucker for effects, so in order to impress me you need lots of tight-looking, well-timed and tasteful effects. For instance AD's "Shameless Rock Video", which is totally brilliant (though I'm not sure about the rainbow-colored parts in the middle and the word 'tasteful').

Still, one of my favorite vids has no effects at all: Scott A Melzer's "All Star". Now that's something I wish I could do...

- Originality
- When the anime and the song go well together. Flow, if you wanna call it that.
- Good lyric sync. Beat sync for things like instrumentals and the sort.
- Use of anime, songs, or artists I like.
- Good use of text.
- I'm not a fan of special effects. So when you use one or two and they add to the plot, then I am impressed. Of course, a good AMV without them impresses me the most.

A concept that works and good, solid editing to back it up, along with a healthy dose of originality.

Practically what most of the people said above PLUS the usage of newly released anime series that's doesn't get much attention like D.N. Angel or even Figure 17. Good thing some international creators actually attempt this.
