Well, people make videos from what they like, usually without caring about what's been done (whether that's all right or the source of all evil depends on your opinion) - and errr, the definition of "mainstream" IS that it is most popular.
Uh, that made no sense. What I meant to say is: Lots and lots of people like the same music. AMVers, being a section of that public, follows generally the same trends. (Though it is skewed; you see more J-pop and less boybands, etc., in the AMV "public".)
As for me, I try. If I had an idea I loved to a commonly used band, I would do it - my main concern is the fit between idea, sound, and visual. Though so far, I think two of the bands I used had one video each when I got here (Erasure and Morcheeba) and the other had several, though mostly to the same series (Depeche Mode).
Uh, my point, such that it was, was that it basically shows that people's tastes are mainstream. But in the end I think what matters is the quality of the video's execution and concept, not what band they used.
