1) Its worth the $4 or so investment to try it at least once, IMO. Check in your local market, you might find some.
2) Its easier to understand if you know what's in it. Its pickled cabbage, a little onion, garlic, salt & hot chili paste, (like those big bottles of red hot sauce you see on the table in a lot of chinese fast food places) fermented in a jar for a while, till its a little fizzy.
3) I guess the closest I could come to a description to other foods would be to say: Imagine sauerkraut laced with garlic, chinese red chili paste, and some chopped cocktail onions. But different.
