I would think the opposite... really. I've seen quite a few WMVs and they were in awsome quallity and much smaller than AVIs... actually, untill I saw this thread here, most people suggested me the use of WMV over AVI.

Also... what's so wrong with DivX 4/5 that you suggest DivX3 so highly? I've seen quite a few good DivX5 vids as well... Personaly, until proven to be good, I wouldn't listen to any advice I see here... well, except for the sound codec, maybe.

And now for the reasons NOT to use WMV:

- <b>it's a closed container</b> (don't ask me why, everyone just seems to agree that this is just bad for some reason)
- <b>bad compatibility</b> (apparently they don't play back well on non-Windows computers)
- <b>seeking is horrible</b>
- unless you're using the WMV9 codec, then <b>quality is NOT "awesome"</b>; watch some good, well-encoded DivX/XviD AVIs and you'll realize this. I've noticed that WMV (before 9) is particularly bad at fading to and from black, and probably other crossfades as well. (The macroblocking noise... AAAAHHHH my eyes!) And even with WMV9, the compression is not significantly better than DivX/XviD. You can get pretty good quality from WMV9, but the file will be just about as big as it would have been if you'd just made a DivX/XviD AVI instead.
- people are, in general, <b>less likely to download your video</b> if they see that it's a WMV, because WMV (like RM) has become <b>irreparably associated with small files and crappy quality</b> (even though it can produce larger files and decent quailty), because (like RM) it's mostly used for Internet streaming (and because of all the small crappy WMVs that people have uploaded here).

I just have one simple question... is the software on doom9/gordainknot FREE? Like I dont have to pay a fee or anything to get it?

Also can some one PM with the filters and codedec's that I need to start ripping DVD's?

Another thing, when you do rip does it mess with your DVD at all? Like the program could some how freeze the DVD where you can't read at all. I.E. like what happend when some uses a GameShark on a game and I can either mess up your system or mess up your game.

Since my german isn't what it used to be I'll just reply in english.

The best program to make AMV is difficult to say. I think Sonic Foundry Sony Vegas 4, but other people will say Premiere. I tried a lot of programs without using the manuals just to see which one was the newbie friendliest and sony vegas kinda stuck on me. Check out this list
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/phpBB/v ... hp?t=14257

and this link to the guides

http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/

The reason why you can't download is probably because in the first two weeks you can't use the local downloads, so you'll just have to be patient.
However you can use the direct and indirect links to download (just ignore the pledge buttons or better still pledge).

I think that you'll get a better response when you post in english.

this most diffenatly incorrect I export my videos from Premiere and the file sizes a huge the file size aren't even close as in 309mb divx avi or a 25mb wmv format video.

thats just my 2 cents

I don't understand how one AMV could come out as 309 MB after DivX compression, unless the bitrate was set to something insanely high. I mean, a 309 MB HuffYUV AVI I can understand, but not DivX.

But in any case, quite frankly, it's your fault for not using decent codec settings. And in addition, you shouldn't be exporting DivX videos straight from Premiere, because you don't get to do any postprocessing, and Premiere's deinterlacing, resizing, etc. sucks.

The only thing I can think of is if you somehow set it to export an uncompressed AVI (I don't know if this is possible with the codecs from www.divx.com, but I know it can be done with ffdshow.)

I don't think I've ever seen a 309MB divx movie before, except for feature length stuff (heck, 25-minute fansubs only weigh in at ~200MB!) My AMVs tend to come out at 25-30MB using ffdshow (encoded as XVid) so your WMV export shouldn't much smaller than if you'd used XVid or DivX.

Ummm, I'll attempt a translation. Sorry anybody out there who is actually german when I make a mistake or two. German is only my second language.

"I am too dumb, So I'd rather ask if someone could tell me the program, or better the link to the program with which I can make the best AMVs. I would be very thankful if I could get an exact answer and not....blah blah blah you have not read the guide, in which I get lost. One more question, why can I not download from here, It (the website-edit) should be the biggest AMV archive.

MFG Vadimka

P.S. Nich thx fur everything wanted to appear rough which to write" [I had no idea what it meant so I babelfish'd it]
