Hosting a Site on Your Own Machine

Postby (NERD Studios) Macbeth » Sun Aug 11, 2002 4:47 pm

Or, to be more accurate, a file. I have recently produced the master for my first AMV, which will premiere at Anime Expo New York this year, and I would like to make it available for download over the internet. Though I already have several hosts in mind, I am currently saving money for the con, and cannot spend money on a host and domain until afterwards (there's a resin statue I'm after  ).

To get to my point, I've heard several people on AMV say that they host their sites/videos on their own machines. As I currently have access to an exceptionally good internet connection, this would be a feasible stopgap solution until I can afford hosting costs. My question is, what kind of software (if any) is involved in this, and how do I go about it? I've had several websites, but I've never tried to host one on my own machine.

In the event that these instruction are too arduous to post, I apologize for wasting time, space and bandwidth. I realize that I am asking for a quick fix here, and am more than willing to find out about this on my own if necessary. If you feel that this post smacks too much of begging, I will apologize in advance. It is simply that the video and entry have been done for awhile now, and I'd like to give people the chance to download/comment on it without waiting another month.

With thanks,
Macbeth(Nick Youngblood), Professional Lurker

Well, you could run some FTP server software on your machine. That's probably the most straightforward solution.

Be aware that running a server may violate the terms of you service agreement, but if you run it on some weird port with passworded user accounts, they may not catch on.

I'm still researching the details of how to create a weblink that will access such a server reliably, (not that I'd ever do such a thing, muahaha) so I'll leave that detail out for the moment.

For windows, http://www.bpftpserver.com has a free 30 day trial, maybe that will work for you.

Well for me, I use Serv-U to host my videos on both of my machines.
