I don't usually use songs that I personally like. If the song goes well for the amv, then I make the video. After the video is done, and if it's done well, then I like it. I tried it out a few times with the songs that I liked, I kept getting things in the areas of it looking like I feel and not how it should. Too much emotion in an AMV can make it very unnatural looking to other people. So song selection is prime. You have to choose a song you can effectively use. It must be a song for the effect you want to achieve. Any way of locating these songs is plausible. So I disagree you have to have a wide taste in music, you just have to have an open mind.
