Actually with how fucked up Roadrunner is setup, I have to have a router to be able to share the internet with the computers here.

same here, without the router we couldn't share the DSL. If I could dump the piece of shit, I would. It's a pain in the ass, but oh well.

Ikasu, that's a sweet setup man. I'm going for the the 2100's though! Physical memory dumps? hhhmm....Maybe i'll stick with 1 gig and see how that works out. then i'll go 1.5 and so on.

BZZT! wrong answer. Small (4-16 port) switches are not significantly more expensive than unmanaged hubs anymore, and while you can get by with a hub, a switch lets you transfer data more quickly when the network gets busy, because you don't have problems with collisions.

If it's just you and 2 or 3 computers, you probably won't notice any difference, but have 3 or 4 friends over for a small LAN party, and things will get messy in a hurry on a hub, with eveyone leeching off each other, trying to game, access the net, etc.

Sure, you can use dual NIC's and have one machine act as a gateway for the others like I do, but that's cause I don't mind leaving my machine on all the time. A cheap little hardware router/gateway is silent, reliable, uses very little power, and is easy to set up. I assert that they have a very valuable place in the world.

I have a Tyan 2460 also, and two things have come to my attention regarding memory and this board.

1) you REALLY have to push to seat the DIMM's properly in it.

2) using the fourth RAM slot makes my system unstable.

I was using 4x256 DIMMs and sufered the same random reboots(NT crashing) that you describe. After much agonizing, and removing hardware, trying drivers, etc, I got it super stable simply by removing the fourth stick of RAM. Yes, they all passed 6 hours of running memtest.

You might want to pull that fourth stick for a few weeks and see what that does for your stability.

I'm completely new to networking, but don't worry I'm not going to come here and ask for answers. Anywho, I just wanted to comment that all 3 computers that are networked together ALL have their own NIC. Does taht help?????

They all _require_ their own NIC. The only real situations in which you'd be using a machine with more than one NIC are

(1) setting up a gateway for other machines to go through if you wanted to add e.g. a firewall, or
(2) striping network devices for additional transfer speed.

hhmm, that switcher really got my attention. It sounds nice NOT to share bandwidth. I went on a hunt for a "switcher" and found htis on tigerdirect:

It sounds good and from the description alone it sounds like what you were talking about trythil. I'll probably buy it and replace my hub and router. Unless I still need the router then I'll keep it. *continues to do research*

A network switch is not the same as a router. They don't even operate at the same layer of the OSI Model.

A switch simply switches packets on Layer 2 (i.e. MAC address) addresses. A router has the capability to go on Layer 3 (i.e. IP address) addresses and thus inter-network communication.

That is why you need that router.
