How much do you enjoy your sources?

How much do you really enjoy the animes/movies/music you use in your videos?

When I first started I would get pretty burned out on the sources I used for my videos (I still have not watched Afro Samurai again since finishing my video to it back in 2008). Recently though, I've found myself loving them more after finishing a video set to them. I don't know how or what shifted my attitude towards my sources after making a video to them, or if it really just depends on what I used.

How about yourselves? Are there any animes or songs you've used for your videos that you burned out on afterwards, or do you still enjoy them just as much (if not more) after the video's done?

I never get burned out on the anime I use. It's worth mentioning though that since I started watching anime, I've done very little re-watching of any of it. That's partly because the amount of anime I've watched is so pitifully small, and until recently it took a lot for me to sit down and watch through anything, anime or otherwise. But I can say that editing hasn't been the reason for my hesitance in rewatching any anime.

Music, though. That's a whole other can of worms. Generally, by the time I get through editing a video, no matter how much I enjoyed a song at the beginning, I never want to hear it again at the end. I have an extremely low tolerance for listening to songs over and over again. I just can't do it. I know people who can listen to the same song on repeat and enjoy it just as much each time they hear it. I find it difficult to listen to the same song more than once in a day.

For me this is one of the single most frustrating things about the entire hobby. When I listen to music, especially with songs I like, because I'm an editor I naturally try to pair the music up with visuals in my head and I start forming video ideas automatically. So many ideas I've had to just let go unrealized, though, because my love for the song is too great. The cost of making a great video is ruining a song I love -- nope, not worth it to me. For this reason, several bands I love are completely off-limits to me. I will never make a video to a song by Brand New, Belle and Sebastian, LCD Soundsystem, M83, or several other artists even though they're some of my favorites.

I've experienced both burnout and no burnout. It really sort of depends on the situation. I also don't rewatch stuff too often (nearly at all; it took over 10 years before I actually rewatched the Ah! My Goddess OVA), but that's because I have a really uncomfortable setup and so my anime watching energy generally is always focused on watching a series for the first time.

With music I may listen to something over and over again right after first hearing it, but then it tapers off. If I make a video to a song, I may get burned out on it during the process of editing, but once it's finished, that fatigue dissipates until I tire of watching the video over and over again, and then it may take a few months before I can stand to listen to the song again. But the longer time passes, the less burned out on something I get.

Other times, the editing process was so short that I didn't have a chance to get burned out on the music. This generally happened more during the early part of my editing hobby, with the videos I'm generally embarrassed by and edited in under a week (often, less than a day or two). There's only been a couple instances where making a video made me never want to hear the song again (I cringe when I hear Powerman 5000's "When Worlds Collide", although I'm fine with the rest of their stuff, more or less).


More recently, the editing process (and watching the finished result) can make me more aware of the nuances in a piece of music, and that can help greatly in shortening the burnout period.

I only edit with series I enjoy, characters I like, etc. I've tried to edit with things i dont like or arent familiar with and really just cant get into it. I think its cool that others are able to though.

lately havent been watched much anime so I can't really say how I feel about the source. Although there are series I dislike, for some reasons I consider the ideas related to them the most interestings ones rather than the ones I like :s

My anime and music library is huge, so I never really get tired of or burned out with anything. I tend to revisit all of my anime eventually (currently rewatching Kino no Tabi in fact), and I have almost all of my music digitally available and rotate album playlists consistently.

I've really grown to dislike some songs from the constant repetition you get from editing... Never really have any desire to rewatch my sources unless I've been sitting on an idea for a few years and need to watch the show to remember exactly why I had the idea in the first place.

Also, point of clarification -- I do edit with songs I like, almost without exception. But I never (or almost never) will edit with a song that I love, or that I have a special connection to.

I generally only come up with ideas that use music I enjoy. This is mostly because my ideas generally come from listening to music. It's the song that moves me and gets my creative juices flowing and from there I find a source to put to the song.

That being said, I often find myself burned out on a song after I'm done with a video. This is usually due to having listened to the song so many times during the editing process (constantly on repeat prior to ripping footage to picture the video in my head, scrubbing the timeline, beta testing, ect) but my general disdain for a song is usually short lived.

After all, I make videos I want to watch so I find myself watching my own vids and enjoying the music frequently.

As for the anime. I own a lot that I haven't seen yet. And sometimes I'll edit to a source I haven't seen. There are plenty of sources that I have re watched after finishing a video. So it all depends on what I'm in the mood to see.

I never get sick of them. For me, I commonly LOVE to use Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle (especially the OVAs) for video editing. There is just so much story I can tell and portray with it, and so many songs that fit! And also, there are so many concept videos I can invent; so many ways I can use the clips to tell a completely new story, or similar, alternate version. Another I love using is Black Cat, even though I have commonly use the death scene from episode 6, sometimes I like to try to portray it in several different ways until I find the perfect way to use the scene, as well as the perfect song. At times, admittedly though, when I get ideas for other anime I don't have the DVDs of yet (and a song in mind too), it can get a little frustrating 'cause you have to wait 'till you can afford the source material, but in the meantime I still enjoy my main source of video just as much, and even when I have a bigger collection of source material, in the end I still enjoy editing with Tsubasa the most.
