I'm sure almost all of us at one time or another have had a conversation that went something like this: "An AMV? What's an AMV?" "Oh, hey, let me show you...!"
So my question is, what do you reach for most often? One of your own videos? A favorite AMV by your favorite editor? A "famous" AMV that you think makes a good gateway drug?
I tend to show two videos:
Haven't yet found anyone who isn't impressed by Hold Me Now, for a variety of reasons. It's got action, great editing, a great story, great music...it has it all.
AMV Hell 3 has so much creative, entertainment packed into it. It does a good job of showcasing a really wide range of anime, concepts, editing, even effects, and of course is bite size enough so that it can be watched in part or in whole (most people I have found tend to start watching and can't stop).
well it depends on how we get to that subject, if it comes out of me telling them about my hobbies, then i'll show em one of mine, then probably ask em what their favorite anime is and show em my fave with that anime, if it comes out of a discussion on anime then i'll show em a video from that anime of course, and then one of mine maybe, if we're talking about video editing for some reason (which i can't imagine doing with someone who doesn't already edit) then i actually don't know what i'd show em, prolly quiz em on their favorite anime/movie or music and then go from there.
I tried to show amvs to someone who doesn't like anime once... it didn't help... However she loves Howl's Moving Castle and asked me to make one for her. @_@ Her last request was Kungfu Panda 2 and Katy Perry though.

Usually I'd just tell them to check BestAMVsOfAllTime's channel on Youtube 'cause most of the good ones are already there LOL.
But sometimes I'd love to show them something like this, too. Often to those who wanted to start editing AMVs or those who thought video quality and effects are everything.
Certainly depends on the person. If I know of a certain style of music or video that I think would appeal to them, and I wanted them to know what I do.
This is the only amv I show anyone who asks me what an amv is.
If (by some freak chance) said person is still on speaking terms with me afterwards, I will actually show them a video that won't offend the shit out of them.

This is basically what I get. I have been asked what an AMV is but then they just ask to show them mine.
Thanks to TVTropes, I've recently discovered a multitude of AMV's that are a good example of a mash-up of two different works of fiction. Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and Family Guy can make an oddly epic and perfect couple.
