You ask, what makes a good editor?
The same stuff that makes a good artist.
Risk. Skill. Luck. Those elusive elements are there.
But one common factor remains true.
The best artists keep doing what they feel is right, true and fulfilling.
Everyone around them just has to figure out what the artist is doing and enjoy it.
I know it reads like you have to have a bulletproof ego but that's not true. The good artists also know when to subdue themselves and get with "the trend" to survive and build the resume. The (living) artists with long careers have the savvy to know when it's time to break "the trend".
