I'll openly admit that I'm more about the concept of the video rather than the actual anime, and that's just generally how I like working on most videos. The one time I did edit for fun/fandom (my DRRR! video), it was a blast and I loved doing it. It's not something I want to do ALL the time, but it is indeed a fun thing to do. :)
Just because you don't love the anime doesn't mean it's not fun to edit. I'm on the extreme side since I rarely edit with anime I've seen, let alone anime that I like (which are few and far between, really), but that's just what I enjoy. That doesn't make it sad or mean that I take it too seriously, it's just a difference in values. Both views are completely valid, I'm not about to knock someone who makes videos because they love a show, I just may not necessarily appreciate that aspect. (And, like in Chiikaboom's case, the opposite is true.) But, anyway, my point is that I may see anime as stock footage of sorts, but that doesn't mean I'm all omg-super-srs-amvs-are-art-deep-meaning-concept-videos-only, it's possible to be on this end of the AMV spectrum and still have fun*.

*I spend most of my editing time having giggle fits, actually.
I'm kinda 50/50, I've done edits where I haven't seen the anime at all, hate the anime, etc, and I've worked with stuff I get all giddy about (madoka, nichijou, etc <3)

I don't have a strong opinion either way whether or not AMVs are art or not, I can see artistic merits in some AMVs and appreciate the depth that some have, but at the same time it gets annoying when it becomes like you're at an art gallery and deconstructing how the color palletes come together to create specific moods or whatever and all the enjoyment is lost :/ Its kinda like saying you can't enjoy comic books cause they don't have redeeming literary value or something. I don't care I just wanna see Hulk smash and Virginia Wolfe is boring, you know? If Virginia Wolfe smashed though, that'd be something. :dino:

I've never been much for narratives either, and thats probably the one thing that people complain most to me about D: At the end of the day I really just like throwing cool looking and purdy clips on the track and hitting render cause its fun |:> Kinda rambling I guess, but sometimes people forget that all this is really just for funsies sometimes.

Of course AMVs are art.

The problem is when people attach an idea of, sacredness to the word 'art' and treat it as if it's this beautiful untouchable thing that only certain people can create.

x2

Some people hear the word "art" and instantly think of like, a Monet painting in a museum. It doesn't have to be that way!

case in point - dada. Or "found art" or any other form of modern art. Pretty much destroyed any meaning the word may have had. It can and should be used to describe anything and everything. It's about as descriptive as pointing at something and going "that's a thing."

Lots of the responses here make me feel like i'm the only person who edits this way. ~_~;

The fact that a person like me who loves anime and makes amvs and wants to see her favorite scenes to good music is such a rare thing here makes me wonder why this site is called animemusicvideos.org. Why are we restricting the footage to anime then when lots of people dont even watch or like what they're editing with? If you have fun doing that.. okay.. but it baffles me how thats the majority and my views on amvs is such a rare thing. Hell even in the latest IC round we aren't using anime! It seems to me that for a site dedicated to the creation of anime music videos... theres sure a real lack of actual anime fans.

And the whole art deal.. i'm still confused as to why it even matters? Is something that one doesn't consider art automatically have no creative merit? I mean.. I watch an amv and I can't sit there and be like "this is art". Thats just the way I think, and it shouldn't matter since art is subjective. When tell someone is wrong for thinking amvs are arent or doesn't, you're not helping with the whole pretentiousness associated with the word 'art'.

Thanks to everyone who left nice comments ^^

I think a more important question then whether amvs are art or not, and that was inconviently left out of the interview, is why must the aardvarks be flended? O:

Awesome read!

I really understand where's she's coming from with the "I edit because I'm an anime fan" statement. All of her new HxH videos just made me want to reread the manga! I don't know why, bu I naturally steered clear of some of my favorite series like HxH and Getbackers. I guess I subconsciously thought those series were overused and never used them. But now this makes me all the more willing to use them in a chain of amvs! :D

Even just in this thread, you're so not in the minority, I'm not sure where you're getting that idea, aside from my one post. :p

I remember that Re-Evo chat too =)

I like your vids a lot Chii. I'm glad you edit because you like to, and don't really care much about what people think <3
