For me, the worst piece of advice I ever got was : Don't use a song unless it's well-known *scoffs* Seriously? What kind of logic is that? I think it's great to use lesser known and obscure songs in AMVs! It will introduce them to a new generation and new audiences!!
I agree.

Worst piece of advice I have gotten about AMV making is that the lyrics of a song do not matter.

You know what would be a great idea?

You should make editors sing their own songs!

Wrong thread, Todd, you meant to put that in "best piece of advice".

I've never heard a lot of this advice before. It's so blatantly bad that I didn't think anyone would give it, haha.

A piece of advice that sucks:
"Even if somebody hasn't seen the anime, you should edit it so they can understand."

If you haven't seen the anime and you don't get it, then go putz around on amv with an anime you have seen. Obviously my audience isn't you. In every amv there should be a theme, so you can attribute that to some sort of comprehension of the anime, but if a video looks random to you because you haven't seen the anime, then that's your own lack of knowledge. By no means is that video bad because of it. Maybe it really is random, but you're not the best judge. There are some special cases and yadda ya, but in general if I receive comments like this, I ignore them. My aim isn't to make an amv for everyone.

And:
"Use more hard cuts/crossfades next time."

In a specific transition inside an amv, one could work better than another, but to say an amv would just be plain better if one was used more than another, that's ridiculous. The cool thing about hard cuts and crossfades is that they both work well within a specific genre (ie: both could work in an action video) so when an editor chooses to use one over the other, it's all interpretation. That's what makes amvs different from one another and therefore more interesting, because no two persons interpret a transition the same. So just because a song sounds like it would work better with hardcuts to you, doesn't mean it would.

Not only that, but I can list at least 10 anime that I've developed an interest for because I'd seen an AMV for it, despite never having seen it. Yeah, character videos might not make the most sense, and you risk spoilers, but really, many AMVs can just be considered glorified trailers for their source material. :p

I haven't gotten any bad advice yet. I haven't been editing terribly long. Either they already like it, or it's valid criticism that I already agreed with.
