sub-title question

Postby Raze » Mon Feb 24, 2003 5:48 pm

How big of a deal is it if an AMV has subtitles present? I have a couple AMVs that I think are particularly good, that I made with subtitled episodes, that I really don't want to remake now that I have unsubbed footage. So is it that big of a problem to you people? Will I get flamed out of here for releasing these vids, or at least get really bad reviews?

How much people dislike seeing the subs, or how much they lower their scores given by, varies by the individual.

Most people here, are less than fond of vids made from downloaded source, and ones with subs in particular. If you think the artistic aspects of the video are good enough to warrant it, go ahead and put them up anyway, if you can overlook some rude comments and low scores.

Maybe put a warning about the subs on the video's info page, so those who really hate that stuff can avoid using up their (and your) bandwidth, only to be dissapointed.

Unless they are intentional I don't like subs in videos at all. Rory Tate has a good Saikano video and he cropped the subs out. Of course he did it while editing but perhaps you could do it now to your video...

alright, I've decided to redo the vid to get rid of the subtitles. It should only take a few hours once I can get the harddrive space and assuming premiere cooperates. Thanks for helping me make the decision.

Subtitles really hurt an AMV. They detract attention away from the video itself and generally seem unproffesional should they be present.

Wired said it well. I'm glad that Raze has rethought his position.

Unless they're like required or something like, you know, tainted donuts, nightowl didn't really need them in his engel video, but i can see how they added to the whole matching of the song with it and such. If used correctly and only used correctly they can work well, but they are distracting, I'll give them that. Fo sheezey.

Subtitles always boil down to two things with me and most people:

1. You more than likely used a fansub source. This in my book is a big no - no. If it dont agree with my opinion than thats your opinion. The agruement over using fansubs in amvs is age old and doesn't really need to be repeated.

2. They distract WAY to much from the video. Like previously stated there are some instances when it is ok for text to be in the video but NOT subtitles.

People want subtitles in my videos, but that's simply because I like doing a Japanese language songs. :D

Unless you personally put in the subtitles yourself, and they have a specific reason for being there, I say it's a bad idea to have them in the vid.

I am working with some downloaded source at the moment (shame on me, I know :( but it's GitS SAC :o ) And I am either editing the subs out, or cropping the video so that the subs are not visible. It's not as hard as one might think.
