Since it mostly depends on the viewer (some people recognize DBZ as an overused source but haven't seen many DBZ amvs like me for example) I don't honestly think it matters. There are going to be people that claim its unoriginal cause they have seen lots of amvs in the way you have done something and then there could be someone who's seen it for the first time. That doesn't mean you shouldnt try to be creative when possible though.

TLDR: Doesn't matter, do what you want cause you still gonna get what you get.
"The people cannot be [...] always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to [...] the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to public liberty. What country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned [...] that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants."-Thomas Jefferson

There is no over used source only over used ideas at least in my opinion.

I figured this video was relevant to this thread:

I noticed it on the New Vid on the Block a few minutes ago and even though my mind immediate thought it would be one of those "Bleach sexy character slideshow videos", my curiosity got the better of me and I'm glad it did.

Well that was an example of what I mean originally. Although Bleach might be considered overused seems this video was actually fresh for the kind of videos made for Bleach

Thank you, I needed that after today. XD

This reminds me that I should watch the New Block videos more often. I stalk the announcement forum too much. >_<

Like others have mentioned before I think there is a subtle nuance that its not the problem that someone is using a commonly used or popular source as much as executing it with an overused or generic idea. Typically those shounen action anime are filled with a lot of formulaic action/plot that translates easily into AMVs. Take a popular song with a little angst, splice in some action sequences and emo attitudes, cut to someones determined face and burning resolve and finish off with either a triumphant victory or sorrowful defeat. But even a formulaic AMV can be good if done right even with overused sources. I think the naruto/one piece/bleach get a worse rap than others just because they've been on for so long so they've become the generational type of overused as opposed to a temporal type of overuse where a one or two season show sees a surge in popularity while its airing or when the dvd/blu-rays are realeased.

With all that being said, I'm still making a shounen action amv set to Blue Stahli. :P

Some people are like this:
OH MY GAD! THAT LAST EPISODE OF NAR-UTO WAS FREAKIN AWESOME! IN FACT, IT WAS SO AWESOME THAT I ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO MAKE AN AMV WITH IT!

*slaps together a song played randomly in iTunes*

WHOA, DUDE I GOTTA POST THAT SHIT ON YOUTUBE!

Then there are the normal people:
Hmmm, this part in this song reminds me of how the series Eureka Seven went. Hmm, it also has similar metaphors in it. Yeah...this could work! Maybe i'll put some effort into this to make it more entertaining! And since Eureka Seven isn't used as much, maybe this will get some people to watch it!

*put a lot of effort into an AMV*

Cool! Maybe i'll post it on a-m-v.org to see how I did! Maybe the people there can give me some good feedback and tips! Maybe they'll even tell me some good anime to watch!

Don't make stuff on impulse unless you have the impulse engines of the Enterprise.

Or a stack of doughnuts from the store.

>>>Ed Brzezinski’s devouring of a Robert Gober sculpture (1989). As a reminder of the fact that not all forms of art vandalism display the high-strung ambience of early Modernist manifestoes, a quotation from the New York Post is instructive: ‘“Okay, I was hungry,” Brzezinski said, “I’d been drinking and I hadn’t eaten anything all day.” Brzezinski was at the Cooper Gallery to check out the new show of Robert Gober’s work… “I noticed this bag of doughnuts sitting on a pedestal,” says Brzezinski, who also works as a critic and curator. “Plain doughnuts with no sugar. I figured somebody had brought them and then gotten tired of them. So I grabbed one and bit it. It tasted stale.”

Odd, people seem to react more favorably to my "impulse amvs".
