Cosplay Music Videos - Thoughts?

Postby Vlad G Pohnert » Mon Jan 02, 2012 5:59 pm

Interestingly enough, I have been getting a few people asking if I would play CMVs in some of the dedicated AMV Rooms I run.

Originally I really never gave it a lot of thought, but I noticed it is slowly growing into its own sub genera. I know that in some instances diehard Cosplay and AMV type events are seen on different end of the scales, but in some essence CMVs are in some way half way between Cosplay and AMVs.

AMVs also seem to be covering a lot of sub areas such as trailers, Original Animation and even in cases Parodies and Manga music videos as they are still more in line with fandom videos although they are live action

What are people’s thoughts here in the community about these videos? As live action, would they be more considered Live Action MVs with just a anime tie in rather then anythign closer to AMVs?

I'd say they're even different than that. Most live action stuff is, at least, taken from professionally produced and marketed sources, not a camcorder.

I can see a benefit to doing a video vs a traditional masq if for nothing else than it provides a way to take away the inevitable fuck-ups that occur with poorly rehearsed theater performances.

You would have to link an example, cuz I don't see how they could be done well, unless you casted, wrote, and directed the thing from scratch ... like a homemade MV in cosplay outfits.

This is the only CMV that I've seen that seemed pretty decently put together, but I've only seen about 10 or so.

I think of this when I hear something like a CMV, but I'm not entirely sure if that could be considered one

Some of acksonl's stuff would seem to qualify as a music video, but the majority of it seems to be a cosplay showcase with music in the background. The showcase type stuff I would think should be shown during a masquerade or the cosplay type events. The stuff that resembles or is more similar to a music video in the traditional sense seems like it might be ok to show with AMVs since its more than just showing off cool outfits and is more about telling a story or celebrating the anime in a fan made creation. At the same time though, you would think that the masquerade/skit/cosplay type events could more than accomodate CMVs during their allotted time frames.

I think as long as they aren't just slideshows I wouldn't mind watching them at a con.

I have never heard of CMVs before, ever. I have seen slideshows, but I didn't think anyone actually acted and made music videos while cosplaying.

I personally don't believe it's "big enough" to allow contests with it, or to have an entire showing dedicated to them. However, if there's more than one person perking up and saying they'd like their CMV to be showcased, then there's no reason not to I suppose. Might have to make special arrangements, as I don't think they fit in either the AMV or LAMV category (particularly because both use professionally made anime/movies, and really nothing else) I think it fits more under that.... I don't know the name. When people cosplay and act as their character in a skit.
Also, I don't think there'd be more than 20 minutes of showtime, but I may be wrong. Like I said, I didn't know people made them. But if it is big enough for an entire showing, I think they deserve their own category, rather than being put in with AMV contests and such.

Actually, I've been looking into it a bit more and it seems to be more than just 20 minutes! I would say I could fill an hour easily.

I know someone who can put me into contact with a person who knows a LOT about CMVs so I can look into it further. I think there seems to be enough material to put a block together and try it at Sakura-Con and Tekko's AMV Rooms and see how it goes.

Maybe even a slot in the VAT (AWA) at it sure fits the room's "Video Art" theme. I am of course talking about the creative videos and not just slide shows to music as I don't think those are considered real CMVs anyway. I'm always open to options involving video art

And actually, I know of a specialized Coplay themed con that is going to be doing a CMV contest this year so that might be interesting to see how that works out too..

Maybe CMVs are the final solution for Cosplay to take over AMVs :P :P :P :P

As long as it's entertaining and fills a different niche from the other cosplay events, then why not?

All I had scene of cosplay MVs prior to this thread were live action parodies of openings like this-- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bj4ttWEYjCw&

One time I had an idea to do a live action movie trailer for Noir. It never got done because I couldn't find any cosplayers at the time. That and I didn't have a camera worthy of the effort....geez, I hadn't thought about this in years...hmmmmmm

Original animation is allowed.

I think this is really cool. If there is an interest and you can fill up an hour slot with it, definitely try it.
In a way, I think the only reason that AMVs as an art form ever became popular is because a few people originally made them, and then people saw those and thought they were cool, and everyone started copying and trying to do it themselves.

With youtube and cheap cameras, everyone wants to be a director these days, and so its probably natural that we would see videos like this start to come about. By showing them at cons, more and more people would see them and aspire to make their own, and it could also turn into something big.
I would say to dont even try to force it into any sort of a box such as "music videos". Encourage people to make whatever they want, and if some of them happen to be music videos, that's cool.
