End of the year. AMV Resolutions and Fun.

Postby Shin-AMV » Wed Dec 28, 2011 8:44 pm

Its the end of the year so I thought it'd be fun to make a fun thread to just mention what you think you've learned about editing over the year and what you plan to improve on for next year. Also if you want, you can post your first video you created this year and your most recent one for comparisons sake. Also maybe mention out of all the videos you made this year which one was your favorite.

Lastly to make it a little more interactive instead of people coming in here and just posting about themselves, post something nice about the person(s) who have posted above you, it can be anything like your favorite video of theirs or where you think they've improved and then maybe some friendly constructive criticism to help them improve more.

For me I felt I learned a lot through this year. Among the most important I think was being able to do decent rendering/encoding and the benefits of lossless/uncompressed rendering.

I still feel I have a lot to improve on, and I'm absolutely terrible still with playing around with colors and thats one thing I really want to try more of next year. So I'll be playing around with color correction, color curves, etc a lot more. Also I need to stop lip syncing in random places <.< lol

First video this year:

Its hard to pick a favorite, I had a lot of fun making all of them, so its a real toss-up for me.

Toss up between these two:

Editor Above: What I loved most about Shin-AMV this year was that all of his videos made me smile while watching them. They looked so much fun to edit/work on, and it really shone through beautifully in that regard. Plus, hello? FRIGGIN SAFETY DANCE. XD

Learned: I came a long way this year. I tried almost all the different genres, and I learned several different editing styles. While I still enjoy romance most of all, I have a newfound respect for other editors and what they do. Oh, and I also learned that I should never make people advertise as a theme. XD [Plus, this is also the first year that I actually could remember avisynth filters without having to have the guides out on my lap for everything]

Improvements: I plan on moving up to 720p for all videos/projects [except for the Disney MEP, relax ya'll], and attempting to try more effects usage [mask transitioning, ect]. I also plan to try the two remaining genres of Fanservice and Dance.

Fun thread idea Shin. This should be good. :3

I actually made 2 videos in a year... yea one was only a minute and a half and i made them about a month apart from one another, but still, that's a big step for me. Also, think my lipsync got a bit better. Nowhere near haunter's god level, but better than crap.

What I learned:
* CS5
* Rotobrush - it's a cool concept that doesn't work well in practice.
* Fun things with particle effects - like creating fire (yes, i made the fire in SEIR from scratch with particles)

Plans to improve:
* Make two or more full videos in a year.
* Develop some more new techniques
* Maybe try an actual drama vid.... lol.

Above Me:
* Shin - Dude is a freaking machine. Too many good videos to believe. I formally request his presence to dissect him at AMV 101 at Anime Boston this year. Our running theory is that he made some sort of pact with an amoral furry thing for AMV power overwhelming.
* CodeZTM - He brought back the interviews. I'm really enjoying those. I hope they keep going. Also thoroughly enjoyed the Org editor contest.

My Still unreleased Rainbow Dash video.

This year I learned that taking on a 40~60 hour a week job sitting in front of a computer screen all day really drains me creatively and I rarely want to sit at my PC when I get home and actually work on videos. I also learned that MLP is like Azumanga Daioh and you can do just about anything with it, plus lip syncing is really easy to do well if you spend the time due to how expressive the MLP characters are.

I plan to improve for next year by getting a little bit more back in the swing of editing. I mean, 1 video this year? Really? True, I have a few vids in the works and others I've been too much of a perfectionist to finish and release, but man was this a light year for me. I do also plan on making more fun and enjoyable videos too. I mean, I have such fun working on the Dance series as well as every 'racing' vid I've done. I need to concentrate more on that and less on trying to be high concept or effects heavy as in the end I just don't have any fun doing it and the final product should it ever get out is never as enjoyable as the simple videos I make are.

As for the jokers above, Shin dude, you are a beast. Keep up the good work and don't forget to Dance! Code, I know I've said it before but I can't thank you enough for taking on the interviews again, and seriously, you need to Dance more as well. It's fun to get jiggy with with every now and then. Oh and Bashar... you beat me to the Tron idea and have helped promote the greatest saying ever! Oh, and lest we forget actually proving that ACEN is really GAYCEN :D

This wasn't a good year for me. I only made two AMVs (one for an IC Contest and the other one was supposed to be a 2.30 mins lenght AMV, but I decided to make a shitty mini-AMV because I was tired of it ). So my favourite AMV of this year is the one I'm still editing. The only good thing of this 2011 was the fact that I enjoyed making all the shits I did, MEPs for birthdays of friends included. I hope in a better year |:>

Hmm...

My AKROSS entry last year was my last AMV of 2010 and, my only AMV of 2011 =D. I did take part in an MEP & IC though.

MEP

IC

I am already working on my first AMV of this year. Hopefully, it'll be good and then.. we will see what I make =''D. I decided to make a lot more this year if I have more time... There is a long list of ideas that need to be put together... let's see what happens.

First non-MEP video of the year:

Last video of the year (so far):

For me this year was massively saved by Project OrgEditor. I hope the next year I can get myself together (had a lot of trouble with switching to new flat and job) and produce some decent full-length pieces. I already know everything I want to know, so no improvement there, I suppose. I am an oldfag regarding the techniques I use :>

I hope to be able to produce a decent year of JCAs and help Code with his projects.

Also good moderating of the forums :>

Created a whopping three videos this year! :dino:

Won and lost my first IC this year.

Pissed off the Russians with Disco Heaven. (Well Redbull did by putting it on the front page of AMVnews ... riots ensued. :uhoh: )

Need to make an upbeat video for next year. :ying:

Looking forward to seeing more videos from you guys and gals next year.

On the topic of AMVs & resolutions...

*sigh*

I need to finish some AMV related stuff. I've not had time for much else, but I did help make a http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Tjb14VoWjg pony video. Dr. Dinosaur (FallChild_42) and I won a prize at AWA for the intro to it. I have been spending all my time working on my anime feature film. http://zephyrstar.blogspot.com

So my resolution is this:
*3 or so unfinished AMVs need to get done
*2 live action vids need to get done
*Ponies The Anthology Part 2 in progress
*WORK ON THE FILMMMMMMMMMM

Don't really have a favorite of this year O.o

What I learned:
People don't get my silliness, and they think it ruins some kind of mood that I was not attempting to create.
I suck at upbeat apparently.

Plans to improve:
I really don't know, there's nothing really that strikes me as something that stands out that I want to work on. I'm pretty rusty so maybe I'll just improve on everything.

Person above me:
ZephyrStar keep making videos please? I really enjoy them O:

Resolution:
I want my editing style to become a little more versatile. I plan on doing this by making a few action videos, a few trailers, a technical/ effect video, and a couple more fun/ upbeat videos.

In addition to expanding my editing ability, I also would like to win a few particular awards. I'd love to win Otakon's sentimental award with a Disney AMV again. I'd also like to win and AWA Pro award. And I'd be fine with just having a submission ready for Akross next year.

What I learned:

I learned how to properly edit scripts in Sony Vegas.

a few people above me:
Shin: You really had an amazing year. You just kept pumping out one great video after another. You're acually my #1 pick for editor of the year.

Code: You are without a doubt the best MEP/ project coordinator that I've ever had the pleasure of working with. The way that you organize and show a genuine interest and dedication to the projects that you're involved in is actually the driving factor behind the success of all all of them. I eagerly look forward to all the projects that you have planned for next year.

JaddziaDax: Right-Hand Girlfriend is definitely one of my favorite romance videos of the year. I smile whenever I watch it, and it was a great addition to the Valentines Day MEP. Also, it was the AMV that got me to watch Midori Days.

To all the sickeningly amazing editors here:
Spoiler :
Shin - You're editing just straight up makes me jealous. :| You've quickly become one of my favorite editors.
Code - You're such a good editor, but I really admire the fact that you're so versatile, what with your new interviews, journals, and your ability to give critique that's actually constructive. Keep it up, you're someone to be looked up to in all areas. :)
Bashar - I admire your amvs so much, and have for a long time. Legacy is one of my favorites, as I'm such a sucker for trailers. Keep making amvs for a long time, please.
ngsilver - I don't mind so much that you've only released one video this year -- quality over quantity, you know. And your videos are true quality.
diegao - I'm a huge sucker for raw-ish editing, since that's just how I edit too. Enymus is a great, simple video, and I'll never get sick of it. I want to see more of your videos in the future. (:
Ashy - God I love everything you edit. You have so few amvs, so I always wonder when you're going to release something, but when you do I'm never disappointed. I look up to you a lot.
ReggieSmalls - You're literally the most original editor I've ever seen. You've also improved so much in such a small amount of time, it's astounding. And the funny thing is, you were never bad to begin with. You're just... talent. :/
Nya-chan - I can never predict what you will make next. You're such an original editor as well, it's mind-boggling. You've touched nearly every genre of amv, it's really cool. Just keep editing, k?
JudgeHolden - Whenever I see you've edited something, I get sickeningly happy. Your videos are so admirable. They just vomit "I'm good."
ZephyrStar - It's quite obvious there are many talented editors, but just going through everyone in this thread one by one and really analyzing it makes me sick. Then I get to you, and it just... bklwqatjalg. I don't even know what to say to you. I can't even look at your pixelated username.
JaddziaDax - You've been editing for so long, and you are always improving. I probably plateaued a year after editing, and here you are... gosh. I love It Goes so much. All of your videos just have a very polished feel to them, I love it.
kireblue - ugh. The Oz Network? Summer Wars? Kazuma? A trailer? It's like my wet dream (sorry.) I just adore your videos. You're another one of those editors that just always crap out amazing stuff. :(

As for me:

My first video this year and my absolute favorite, out of the last few years.
Actually, it's sort of a lie. This small little thing I edited a few days before, but I don't consider it a full amv. The first one is full by my standards, haha.

The last one I made this year.
I'm currently in the Lady Gaga MEP, so that will probably be the last one that I started this year, but not finished.

Resolutions:
I'm one of those people that tend to hate everything they make, so...
I hope by next year I can make something that I like.
I'm also thinking of entering a convention. I just hope I can actually make one of the videos how I imagine it.

As for what I learned:
Nothing I can recall. I seem to have plateaued ):

What I learned: I feel I'm a bit better with masking and started experimenting with them in transitions. Made huge improvements in my lipsynching skills. Learned how to use some of the effects a bit better. Oooh, and I found out that I'm terrible at ICs

Needs work: Using text. Choosing fonts and colors is a nightmare for me. Color correction is kinda difficult too, can't seem to get the final look that I need. Also, learn to be more creative when using transitions.

Shin: I have no idea how you manage to edit as many awesome videos during one single year. I'm beginning to suspect you're actually more than one person...
Code: Kudos for making so much for the community. It just wouldn't be the same without you.
Bashar: Thanks for helping me prove Acen is truly Gaycen :D
Nya: Always there to help with editing software and/or running various org related events. Thanks for that!
Zephyr: Make moar ponies! And that Anthology intro was amazing.

Kind of an off year for me. Almost all the videos I made were only because of Project OrgEditor. I've had a list of AMVs I've wanted to make that I just didn't do because of one excuse or another, it's kinda disappointing. So for next year, I want to make some headway with those video ideas, at least one of which is particularly ambitious (for me, anyway.).

Additionally, I want to try to contribute more to AMV announcements, to new videos, maybe do more free OPs threads. I did some of that, and I watch a lot of videos, I just don't comment as much as I should.

Also, somewhat related to AMVs, I want to make it to NDK this year.

Person above me:
Kosmit, it seems like only yesterday you were releasing your first video. It didn't take you very long to get great at editing, did it? And not being that good at ICing is not really that important, I wouldn't worry about it. :p
