 $17 to cover in part "administrative costs." Bullshit. That is profiteering, and goes beyond every code of ethics I believe in when it comes to the distribution of AMVs.

Here are the only costs that should be involved. The DVD-r and the cost of shipping, anything beyond that is an attempt to garner profits which is blatently illegal and should not be supported by this community.

It's not a DVD-R. It's actually been mastered and pressed. More information here:

PS: Of course, if you want to get a DVD-R copy from someone who got it, that's your prerogative.

I still don't know why it ISN'T a DVD-R. Instead we got a pressed DVD-5 that's been poorly compressed and features ExpertDV's Craptaular AMV taking up space, all for more than a legit DVD nowadays.

I agree re: profiteering. This wasn't something that needed pressing, and IIRC the original run was supposed to be enough to break even and then some. Plus, the encoding job sucks and the DVD layout itself isn't really that good. Additionally, everything except for Ubernostrom is available online ANYWAYS, so take advantage of the BitTorrent and do a little searching and save your money.

Profiteering my left nut.

They need to sell a LOT more copies just to break even. Get your facts straight before you condemn someone who's losing money for you.

According to the website, they are selling copies previously made that have not been sold yet.

Also, it is my understanding that they are covering the expenses incurred by supporting the Iron Chef contest by selling this DVD (as has been said, it isn't just a DVD-R), although I cannot offer anything to support that.

They spent thousands sponsoring Iron Chef, and were hoping to make some back by gaining some fans as customers. I think they've sold one ShuttlePro for $100.

Right so they sponsored Iron Chef and are "selling" a product to recoup costs. Now, generally, a company sponsors a program with the hopes that through their involvement they will recieve positive advertisement and garner costumers or attention toward a legitimate product they offer or cause they support.

This DVD can hardly be viewed as a legitimate product.

Regardless of the "cause" a DVD that is sold at a cost beyond the material cost of the DVD is ethically wrong.

Indeed, did all of the creators who worked on this project give permission for the use of their work on this DVD for this purpose. Seriously, do AMV creators get a cut of the "profits" given to them to cover their own costs? Given the line of arguments in support of the cost of this DVD the creators should also be getting a cut to recoup their own expenses.

They're not. Their Iron Chef loss is their loss. Right now they're just trying not to ALSO lose money on the DVD.

It's not.

earthcurrent wrote:is ethically wrong.

Therefore, it's not.

Are you people not listening? They PRINTED the DVDs. That's enormously expensive for a small batch. Now, you can say that it was UNWISE to have the DVDs printed, but that doesn't make it wrong.

So essentially they made a bad business mistake and I should feel some sort of pity for them then... :?

It's just the expertdv guys going to the effort of making a real pressed DVD for the project and selling it at cost in order to get an advert or two in there. Is there anything wrong with that?

I don't see any pleas for pity. It's an honest product, you either buy it because you'd like a pressed dvd of the project or you go and download it. It's your choice, there's no need for arguments over ethics as there aren't any in question here.

Selling anything at cost is impossible to do and still stay in business. You wouldn't call ADV and demand to get Evangelion at the price it cost them to print the DVDs (not and not get laughed off of the phone at any rate).
