I personally don't have a problem with getting paid to make an AMV, but technically if I'm getting paid for making an AMV I would also make sure that what I am doing is completely legal. So in essence I would be getting paid to edit a video, which I do from time to time (none of which I post to this site, mostly because it doesn't involve anime,) but in the end it'd be like an AMV.

Anime companies have been known to in the past come to amv creators and pay them to make promo spots and trailers for their licensed series. As long as the source is legally obtained and the venture entirely above the table I'm cool with it.

Now if someone offered to pay me to make an amv, like I would normally do for free just like any of the ones I've posted, I'd have to (and have) decline. After all, while we tend to hark on fair use and the non-profit nature of the hobby, taking money to do something that is technically illegal (in many ways actually) would just not be right. That and I'd want to be credited for my work that I spent so much time on, not have it masquerading around as someone else's video.

In the end this is kind of along the same lines of debate as copyright as far as it goes with AMVs. We've beaten that dead horse so many times already, I don't really feel like getting into it again.

I wish I could legally. Then I wouldn't have to work this dumb job, pretending to understand the endless, mind-numbing, soul-sucking bureaucratic rules & regulations.

Then I could be pretending to understand the endless, mind-numbing, soul-sucking technical aspects of video making that I will never comprehend. At least with THAT I care.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to beat the dead horse either, its just something I was curious about. From what I can see the biggest issue is licensing, and, if you take down the licensing issues (Music and Anime), then it's completely legal. I really want for AMV editors to start getting paid for doing what they love. That being said, I know I sound like I have my head in the clouds, but I assure you that my head is screwed on right this time, and I think I have an idea of how to pay editors to make AMVs... If its successful, then it can turn into something much more.

I just rather do real MV-ing with originally shot footage - working for the actual artist.

But back on topic, I see AMV-ing as a hobby, nothing more nothing less.
However, if an actual anime studio would hire someone to make a PV or such, with collaboration with a band and yadayada, I'd accept it as yet another part of my portfolio

At my case I don't recommend it. Remember that this is a hobby (unless you like to make also LAMV) and it should stay as a hobby.
I have been offered to direct the otaku community here, since nobody else makes amvs rather than me and obviously I have had the chance of gettiong paid for everywhere time I edit something. I stated first that I wouldn't accept money, but instead, something like food or a new laptop, or whatever thing I think in the moment.

Thanks to my current work, I don't consider money really necessary. I just need more time to edit though

Let's pretend it's completely legal.

It sounds great in theory and maybe it could be good side money.

But if we're talking about making livable, "quit my day job" wages, it would require speed and consistency especially in this rapidly trend changing society of ours. Most of us spend so much time on our ideas that we can only release less than 3 amvs per year. If we were required to at least pump out 1 amv a week to make a living, that would make us end up with rushed ideas and we'll be burnt out.

Beowulf said years ago that the best MTV videos will never be as good as the best AMVs since we spend months and even years perfecting our craft where the industry works on punishing deadlines. In order to make any *realistic* money off amvs, we'd have to pump them out at a rapid rate which would end up being quantity over quality.

Maybe if the awards were much, MUCH higher value (like pro golf maybe) then at least some could make a good living at it. You'd need a lot more fans and then you'd need sponsors and such.

I wouldnt mind getting paid, as long as i can work at my own pace, and with my sources... oh wait, that's not what getting paid is about... and all the "time" i take on my videos lately is more like procrastination...

(and why does lamv make it not a hobby? I can be a retarded fan of something live action just as easily as i can of an anime series :P)
