The Org App... need more testers...

Postby Pwolf » Sun Jun 19, 2011 12:20 am

I've been working on an android app for several weeks after seeing this thread. Just started beta testing a few days ago with a lot of great feedback and a bunch of bug fixes. However, knowing a lot of people probably don't frequent that sub forum, I am hoping to draw some attention here and get some additional testers.

I've decided to try and keep this test relatively small as my current testers are providing a lot of feedback and bug reports already but I need a wider variety of devices (tablets and handsets) that span different versions of android. I'm also looking for people who are really willing to help and aren't just trying to get a copy of the app for their own enjoyment.

Current features include searching the database, viewing video information and, the best one, streaming video ;) I'm sure some of the current testers will post here saying how awesome it is *cough*noupdatesifyoudont*cough* j/k

If you would like to help test, please send me a PM with the following information:

Phone/Tablet Manufacturer and Model .
Version of Android (this can be found by going to settings and clicking on About Phone. If you are running any custom roms, let me know also.)

I can't guarantee that everyone who PMs me will be selected to test but if you are selected for testing, you will receive a PM with information on how to obtain and install the app as well as instructions on what I expect from you as a tester.

Feel free to discuss any concerns or requests in this thread.

PS: No iOS (or WP7) app... yet.

I don't know how well this can help, but there is an android OS that's x86 compatible that could be used for testing as well. Just setup a VM and install it. I've been thinking about doing it myself actually so I can try out android apps and perhaps do some testing of my own.

Indeed! Especially since I know the talented Scoot will be offering playlist capability and whatnot :3
So far, I'm liking what I see, even though my phone is currently driving Scoot bonkers :ying:

Question: anyone have a good reason why i shouldn't put this up on the android marketplace once i think it's ready for general distribution?

I wasn't originally going to for several reasons, but i'm looking back on that decision and thinking otherwise.

Once it's ready, I see no reason to NOT put it on the marketplace. There are likely TONS of members with Android devices, but not all are going to be as comfortable as we are with rooting our phones/tablets. Having the app available on the marketplace ensures that nobody is left out if they don't have the tools or desire to root their device.

You don't have to root your phone to install it. Just have to tell the device that non-market apps are ok to install.

Except the ones where the carrier has disabled sideloading...

Are their other carriers aside from At&t that did this? Amazon's app store has sort of forced AT&T to change their policy.

I wasn't even aware carriers had been disabling the option >.>

My original concern for not wanting it on the marketplace was because of possible bad exposure. I really don't know if it would produce any exposure at all, good or bad, but it's more or less the reason I asked for input on the subject. I'm not worried about any personal liability but my biggest concern is pushing updates and making the entire user experience more uniform with all the other apps someone might have installed. From a developer point of view, it makes a lot of sense but as a long lasting member of this community, I'd rather see what the community and administration thinks before I make that decision.

Since it'll be one of a million free apps on the market place with limited appeal and limited exposure to anyone that didn't already know about it from here, I don't see a risk in putting it up from a "glaring public eye" point of view. It's also not going to cause any site bandwidth issues.

That was my initial thought when I started to rethink my reasoning. The app is very specialized for our community and anyone who doesn't already know what an amv is probably wont think twice about not downloading it. At best, someone searching for "AMV" in the marketplace will find it. If someone/an organization wanted to find us and shut us down by searching for the keyword "amv" they would've used google and found us a lot faster by now.

Of course that's all speculation. There's no guarantee something or nothing will happen from it.

I'll talk to the other mods/admins about putting this in the marketplace.

On a separate note, how hard do you think it would be to port this to...say, windows mobile? (6.5 in my case)
