General opinion about AMV viewing at con's

Postby Kawatta-kun » Sat Dec 25, 2010 8:03 pm

And I'm not talking about contests, just random AMV's in screen, for instance, all day long, for everyone who wants to watch or just kill some time.

Let's say I want to do that at some convention.
It would be wrong if I play AMV X or Y without the respective editor knowing about it (but AT LEAST say the editor's vid did was watched at Con X, if taped, and showed it to him/her)?
Or asking permission for ALL?
For, like, a lot of AMV's a day, it would be pretty hardworking for wtv who's organizing to ask each editor permission. And other issues involved such as language barriers and time spent (and at Con's anything is possible, such as some vids after all didn't "aired" due to schedule).

AMV downloading is free, so it is to watch at home without asking. So in Cons?

AWA and ACEN have 24 hour amv viewing rooms... you could always fill the time with amv related panels and whatnot, let the panels organize themselves and ask permission.

I personally don't mind people playing my videos at cons without my permission, I've had it happen at least a couple times, it just gets me more comments and views later on... I've also played other people's videos without their permission, so I guess I would have to say I'm okay with it that way as well. >.>

AFAIK, the default is to not ask permission actually. At leas,t I know some of my vids get played here and there and I've never been asked for permission. I've also never heard anyone throwing a shit fit over it either. Those still in the hobby seem to take it as a compliment. Those no longer in the hobby aren't around to care one way or the other.

If you're really concerned about it, you may want to inform the editor. Not ask, just inform. But that all by itself could be a huge task, playing videos all day will literally be hundreds of vids. That's a lot of informing, which is probably why no other con I know of does.

A couple of my videos have been played at conventions without my permission, and I was actually pleased to hear they played (Thank you, JudgeHolden :ying: ). The only time somebody asked me to have one of my videos play at a con was VividCon 2009, and I was more than happy to send it.

It's like what godix said - We mostly take it as a compliment to have our videos played at a con. And for those who aren't involved with the hobby anymore would probably care less about it. The only time we have an issue with someone playing one of our videos is if they are trying to claim it as their own.

But I agree, if you are concerned, then you should probably inform the editors that you are playing their videos. It'll be a ton of work, but if it gives you peace of mind, then I say it's worth it.

If you make it avaible for the public over the internet, than you probably WANT people to watch and enjoy it.

You will probably have to deal with a lot of people who want to know the title of the amv and where they can get it. So... adding some pumpers with credits on the video would be a good thing.

I would be delighted to know one of my vids was played at a con. It's like finding someone else ULd it on youtube. As long as my credit is there - go for it baby.

I donno too much about ACEN's room, as I didn't spend too much time in it personally... (I figure it's fairly similar)

AWA however gets people to do panels. These panels mostly consist of people who either show their own videos, try to make some kind of themed grouping of videos, or show videos that inspire them.

They also hold Iron Chef contests live. (I think that there is a specific group that runs those).

They also manage to pull in a good hundred (or maybe couple hundred) videos into their contest, which leaves them room for "request blocks" where if they have no requests they play the list, but if you happen to be there, or one of your friends is there for you, they can request a video from the contest to be played during those blocks.

Then after hours they hold Hentai MV showings, and Hentai Iron Chef stuff... (I think, I never bothered going that late :P)

Did you read my mind? I was thinking about asking that too.

For example in the fest hosted in my city there was an AMV Con I was asked to bring another vids with my entry, my recent vid. So I chose AyAto's vid Charlotte since it was the kind of vid people wanted. I was going to bring also godix's akross entry, but for some reason I had problems with the organizer :/

What I found interesting is that several people wanted to learn making AMVs after watching Charlotte. Since the vid was in exhibition, there was no problem for credits :)

Besides, the original purpose of an AMV is to be enjoyed not only by its creator, but also by several people, and that's not possible by keeping it away, but to let it shine in all its glory

From a convention standpoint
Momocon has a 24 hr AMV room, so I couldn't possibly as every editor for permission. We have a AMV Exhibition where we show AMVs that are submitted to us, so those are the only AMVs that we have permission from the editors to show

From a editors standpoint.
I would like my AMVs to be shown at as many conventions as possible. It helps my AMVs get attention, so as long as someone doesn't enter them into a contest, I'm okay with them being shown without me knowing.

It's completely unreasonable to expect anyone to ask for permission to show videos in a non-contest capacity at a con. They're put online to be shared and shown. AMV rooms and panels happen at cons almost every week at this point. Well-known videos are shown at these things almost constantly.

Also of interesting note, some cons actually reserve the rights to use your videos to promote the con if you've submitted to them in the past. Anime Boston, for instance, plays them near their info desk at their con events and has (at least in the past) played them at their con-row or dealer's room tables at other cons, like Otakon.

I run/provide programming to the most AMV rooms of anyone and on an average, about 350 AMVs are compiled for any one con. Also, we don't always play exactly what we plan and sometime play other stuff too on the fly and also have a large pools of extras. Pretty much if it's been released publicly, then it has the potential of being played as I like to showcase as much work of people in this community as much as possible!

If I was to try to hunt every single person., group down to ask to for permission, then I would not have time left to do all the work for the rooms themselves as then would amount to about 1000+ videos and probably 500+ people/groups to try to contact. However, if we do show a special Project or analyze something in a panel then just outright play it, etc, then for that I look at contacting the creator.

In the end, I look at it this way, if it's publicly released its fair game... If anyone does not want any of their videos played for what ever reason, then they need to let me know and I'll take them off the list.

It is my honest opinion that playing AMVs at Cons to a live audiance is they way it was ment to be in the first palce :D ANd the audience sure loves them! Hell, at most of the cons I run the AMV room has become the biggest room and fastest growing event!

Thank you all for your opinions :D

Being a little bit off-topic, what kind of panels, what do they give to the audience? : )

I would hope that the first bolded is self-explanatory. Some people would show blocks of their own videos. Some of the panels consisted of showing a mep, and was presented by the mep coordinator.

A themed grouping would be something like what I did for a panel: all magical girl amvs. Me and a friend chose our favorite magical girl amvs to show during our block. Another theme might be adult content/comedy (like what someone else in general amv is trying to coordinate). I know someone else who shows his "top 10 'underground' amvs of the year" - videos that don't get much attention but probably deserve a bit more. Another theme might be all amvs from a single show, or another genre.

As for videos that inspire the person running the panel, that should be pretty self explanatory as well.
