I actually enjoy the video far more for it proving that videos with Japanese songs can win contests rather than it being a crossover.

I didn't realize there was any sort of stigma around that. With all the weeaboo at cons, i'd almost think it'd be considered pandering.

Well, I guess that’s just another one of those stereotypes/taboos that we as AMV creators have enveloped ourselves in; the reason for it being there lost to the ages.

The other thing that really drew me to the video, it told a story. An actual story, not just a brief synopsis of the anime's plot or some idiot who can't tell the difference between story and character profile.* Judging from some other comments, it may not have been that enjoyable a story for those who didn't know the animes, but even so it was still a story. And an original story too, although it certainly fit in with the tone of both series. Few videos even try doing that, and I admire the ones that pull it off as well as Tainted Donuts did.

Given the nature of cross-overs (proper cross-overs that mesh together different anime and not just multi-anime videos), I do believe there’s always a high chance that there’s an actual story that will develop from that idea. This is because when you mesh two (or more) things together, almost always you’ll have to come up with a bridging idea (otherwise what’s the point) and that idea is usually a story.

In that sense, though I won’t say that this video is a pioneer of it, I think its popularity helped to create awareness that it’s not all about “good song + good anime = AMV” but that original idea is essential to it too.

It was more of a personal thing. Everyone I knew was saying in 2001 that AMV's with Japanese music can't win contests.
