What do you value higher?

Postby Nya-chan Production » Tue Nov 09, 2010 6:04 am

Just because this interests me a lot recently - if you had to compare two videos, both great technically and comparable, except one thing:

Video 1 uses "overused source", but comes with a new and very original story/plot/atmosphere.
Video 2 uses some less used and more original source, but fits in the "slightly above average" story - your well done romance/drama/action, but nothing exceptional.

For which one would you go?

Neither. I prefer overused sources which retell the plot of the anime rather than attempt something new.

Video 1. I'm interested in the anime and the overused anime tend to be the ones I like best. I probably don't know the anime in the second one, so it would have to be the most amazing amv ever before I'd keep it (or made by an editor I like) and even then I wouldn't rewatch it, I'd just keep it on principle. The first one I would keep and rewatch on a regular basis and possibly share with other fans of that anime. It doesn't even need an original story. It just has to be a reasonably edited video featuring characters I like from an anime I like.

Video 1. Source doesn't matter. Doing something unique with your source is far more novel than simply buying some other DVDs that most people don't own. Concept is king. That said, most of the stuff I watch is a pretty random spattering of what's out there and my AMV watching habit is so infrequently satisfied that I'd have difficulty discerning between the two anyways.

More simply put, the question is just how highly one values the use of rarer anime in and of itself, right? I think it's possibly a misdirected question, as few people really care about the scarcity of the anime used and rather just consider it a possible indicator of the quality of editing. If, as in your case, the quality of editing is already known, then the question just becomes a no-brainer.

In other cases though, if you have say, 50 editors who produce really quality work, and overused and rare anime will both be used by half the group respectively. Then you see 500 amvs with an overused source, and 50 amvs with a rare source. Well, right there you have a 1 in 2 chance of see a really good amv with the rare source, but only a 1:20 chance of seeing a good amv with the overused source. No one cares about the source per-se, but there are just proportionally more good amvs made with the rare ones.

Originality doesn't matter to me as long as I enjoy the video :P

 yeah I misconcepted the idea, sorry about that  but what about both of them using same anime and song? I think originality is irreplaceable.

I used to think that, until I get tired of watching the same thing over and over again :|

but is it boring?

I'd like to point out that the first thirty seconds of this video are very nice.

strange music for the source
unusual editing style complete with visual puns
dramatic atmosphere for a section of the show that is inconsequential and unimportant to the larger narrative.

I think it would be nice to see people abandon the storyline of the animes. Create videos from the ground up that only rely on the source for thematic content that is immediately present in the clip.

so, we should stop making amvs that are attached to anime fandom.
