a 'sticky' regarding YT in the general forum

Postby dazza1008 » Sun Mar 15, 2009 5:33 pm

... there are a lot of "YT muted/deleted my video" threads in the general forum. Would be good if the info available was combined into a post and stickified. Would help them, because I'm sure the regulars here don't want to give complete answers again and again. Also would be good to clarify where they are from a legal point of view, as seen in someone's reply to one of these threads.

...n00bs obviously don't read past the stickies, if at all. :(

usually they don't read the stickies and continue to post otherwise...

truthfully i think it might not be a good idea to stickie it, because last i heard the org wanted to separate itself from the tube drama (he stole my amv!!) as much as possible because really there is nothing the mods here can do about drama over there (which includes the tubes deleted mah audios)

I'm actually wondering why the thread locks have stopped.

Good point - it might encourage people to make posts about it. :? But people tend to be talking about YT anyway, as if it's fresh news "my vid got removed!"

Are you saying this is a stupid thread or that mods seem to be inactive at the moment?

If there are multiple threads on the subject in GAMV, then people aren't looking. A stick would do nothing.

I don't know about the other mods, but I'm not always inclined to lock topics that the community are genuinely answering. It gets newbies to stick around for a while and learn more about the community, plus they might end up being the ones willing to field such questions in the future now that they have experience.

There is also the problem that the forum search index doesn't work for posts made before the server hack, though that becomes less of an issue as time goes by and more posts are made.

Oh, that explains a lot. I was wondering why I couldn't find posts I knew had been posted.

1) I thought there was at least a basic sentiment (even up to phade) that "we're not youtube, we don't give a fuck about their drama, don't post about them." Why else do we even have the damned word filter if not to stop discussion about it?

2) The search function never worked that well to begin with - I haven't used it for years as it always gave me shit for results even when using proper regular expressions, quotations, etc. It always returned several huge threads and a couple of non-related things or pages and pages of worthless results.

Use google to search the site. Enter the terms you're searching for and add site:www.animemusicvideos.org at the end. I find that's far more accurate than the orgs search, especially if searching for multiple terms, and it covers before the forum upgrade.

Why else do we even have the damned word filter if not to stop discussion about it?

Phade's sentiment is rooted in the belief that youtube will eventually make the amv community exposed to those that would put an end to it because it lacked the proper community and policy enforcement. He prevented people from linking to youtube videos in their video profiles in an effort to distance the org from youtube but I don't think that Phade ever intended to prevent people from discussing the site.

It is true that there are word filters, but I believe Paizuri was the one that actually put them in effect and that it was primarily to prevent people from asking us to check out their videos on Youtube. This site has always existed to be a catalog of videos and if people are simply linking to their youtube videos on the forum then the catalog isn't getting updated. Within five months of Phade's post, we updated the announcement etiquette thread to require that users have a video profile before they link to off-site videos.

Maybe I'm wrong and Paizuri actually did intend to prevent users from discussing youtube... however, he is no longer an admin and if he really did feel that way, I don't necessarily share that point of view.

If a topic has been done to death, provide the poster with links to some similar threads that came before it, and leave a note in the mod drop box. We will then lock it when can get to it. Just because the thread is about youtube though isn't enough in itself to warrant a lock. We can't really do anything about the user's problems if youtube spurned them, but we can at least welcome and teach them about our community.

Unfortunately, that will not work with forums that are hidden.

Edit: I think I fixed it...
