How about she downloaded a "bad" codec pack that had the viruses and those spread when she opened the video player or something along those lines? I heard K-Lite Codec Pack is the evil on that regard...

That's what I was kind of thinking. In the past I've always walked her through getting the right players and codecs from the right places, but she's got her IT b/f now handling it for her (and look what happens...j/k) so I hadn't expected he'd let her get anywhere near the wrong stuff. False sense of security, perhaps? lol

As far as I can make out, however, the trojan only showed up right after she downloaded my AMV. Her antivirus program (AVG) failed to catch it or stop it, and the next thing she new it was adware all over the place. AVG then pinpointed the trojan as clinging tightly and exclusively to my AMV file. They can't get rid of it, either, which in my book means it's hiding out somewhere else and perhaps just used my AMV as convenient cover.

I haven't had to deal with this particular trojan, yet, so I don't know what it's habits are, but it's weird, to say the least. I'm going to try and get the name of it out of her so I can maybe get a little more info on it (and what else she's downloaded lately). *sigh*

AVG is saying its your file huh? That is most interesting.

My PC is virus free!

Her b/f is trying to cover his pron trail by using this site as a scapegoat.

The other day I helped a friend of the family remove this thing from their home computer. She blamed her son's "myface and spacebook" for getting the thing infected (entirely plausible) but apparently you get the virus from certian "adult sites".

=D

Yeah... but I didn't rat him out. =P

I'd do what somebody else suggested. Ask where she gets her porn or illegal music from. I'll bet it's either one of those two. >_> Especially if she's technologically illiterate.

No edit button in here?

Also, should be noted that the virus I was referencing uses trojans disguised as video codecs. Fun. =D

He's a sucky IT guy if he can't get rid of a trojan. =\

And anyway, some trojans have a tendency to jump from file to file to avoid being deleted by anit-virus software. I had to remove one from a school computer that did that one time. (And I was a sophomore in high school at the time...what's that tell you about this IT guy? >_> ) McAfee cracked me up as it tried to follow the thing around from file to file.

Trust me - as you may be able to tell, I don't give folks who throw around "I'm IT!!" statements much respect until they can back it up. I have yet to meet an IT guy that I didn't beat to the punch in terms of resolving certain issues. Unfortunately, the whole "IT" title usually impresses people who know nothing about computers, which ironically can cause them a lot of headaches, i.e. my sister.

I would dearly love to ask her what kind of X-rated material her b/f has been soliciting, though. Thanks for suggesting I bring up the matter. It should be quite fun to broach the subject during Thanksgiving dinner. |:>

That virus was a bitch to remove -but a bitch nonetheless.

*flaunts his competence.*

Just for the record, I've never gotten a virus from the .org(y).

I know, I know - this place is about as safe as it gets, these days. Trying to convince someone of that who only sees a virus attached to an AMV file that took out their computer is difficult, though, especially when their "IT" b/f is standing over their shoulder, telling them "I told you so!" I can't even link to this thread as proof I'm not full of it b/c she's sworn up and down she'll never come here again.

People who don't know a lot about computers either tend to scare way too easily or not scare enough. I have a feeling this situation is a classic example of both.
