Any viruses hanging around?

Postby DriftRoot » Tue Nov 04, 2008 9:40 pm

I got home from work today and there was a wrathful message on the answering machine from my sister, who said she downloaded my AMV and contracted some kind of Trojan which destroyed her computer. She now believes this site is evil and filled with viruses of every sort and blames it (and me) for taking out her PC.

This is the first I ever heard of such a thing, but before I tell her it's not my/our fault, I'd like some official backing. IS it possible that coming here and/or downloading an AMV (in this case, mine) would toss a virus onto one's computer? It seems to be some kind of adware Trojan, but she didn't waste breath between yells to say what, exactly, happened and my sister isn't all that computer savvy. Unfortunately, her b/f happens to be an IT guy who's filled her head with all kinds of stuff and he also seems to be convinced the virus came from here, from that downloaded file. Arguing over this kind of thing with them is pointless - I'd much rather just say "No, sorry, but you guys are wrong, it had to have come from somewhere else."

I've received notices from my antivirus software about being "attacked" while browsing this site, but AFAIK nothing's ever gotten through...certainly nothing that would hogtie my HD.

 If there is a virus, it gives a whole new meaning to my AMV's title, that's for sure.

Thanks, guys, that's all I wanted to hear. My computer also is a happy, healthy specimen of PCness - although at the moment it's throwing a terrific fit over something.

When you have a sister who will call you up and yell at you on the answering machine - perhaps even implying no Christmas presents are forthcoming - because she thinks you're responsible for the Trojan she contracted...it's just a no-win situation. At least this way I can have fun saying: "Look, I even asked the folks over there and they agreed there wasn't a problem" and put her in the awkward position of deciding who she trusts more - me or her b/f. :D

I'm a wicked older sister, I admit it. ^_^

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe viruses cannot technically spread through video files regardless - at least certainly not through standard containers like .avi and .mp4.
