Down with postcounts

Postby Paul Kievits » Fri Aug 23, 2002 12:31 pm

Some people are getting turned on by usless numbers and are having huge spam-orgys. Though removing post counts wouldn't completly get rid of that it would improve somewhat I guess, atleast I can remember the old forums without postcounts being lees spam-full.

Before I didn't really care, but I agree completely with this sentiment now. The post counts don't really serve a purpose, and they just lead to people going crazy over getting a lot of posts, or reaching the number one spot in number of post, or etc. This happens a lot with the newer members that find there way to the off-topic forums. I mean, how many threads have been started with the sole purpose of someone wanting more posts, or talking about how they 'own' the forum, or they'll beat Spamda...ooops, I meant SpPanda

Down with post counts. They don't make a difference, just more spam.

Yeah, why not get rid of them? About the only reason keeping track of them is useful is if you have ranks on a forum (some do, like n00b, local, citizen) and posters need to have a certain amount of posts to advance. Since we don't have that here...

Anyhow, I'm willing to sacrifice my mondo post count.

hmmm getting tid of post counts.
Sounds like a good idea. I mean look at SpPanda His post count is way to big. and a big part of that is people posting I am gonna beat the Spamda.while i am sure that some people will never really stop spamming removing the post count will most likely help to reduce spam. Remember when Off-Topic was for actual discussion of off topic subjects and not WHO CAN POST THE MOST PICTURES FROM something-awful.COM!!, oh i am l337 P|-|34|? /\/\3., etc.

Of course like kthulhu said. it would be nice to get rid of that outrageous number under my avatar. -_-

I don't mind it all. IT helps serve me to give me an estimate on long I'm normally on (also with the average amount of posts a day). Anyways, I like using it as a mark for myself. I'm not really interested on how fast I can get to an incerdibly high number, but it's like counting how many goals you've gotten. It's just something you like to know.

Anyways, I don't think that the number of posts a person has can really detect if a person is a spammer, but that average of posts a day. R-A-N-M-A has something like over a 100 posts a day!

Truth is, I don't actually want my posts number to be up since it's been only like 2 days since I joined as a member using this name and I already have near 100 posts. I have another member name which I use to write my reviews. My first member name had a screwy email so I couldn't activate the Forum. Most of my post are genre related and i use them with some restraint.

Some ppl will look at my post number and immediately say I am a spammer, so no, I don't like having my posts number on. It helps to stop prejudices against me and maybe other members of this community as well.

Anybody can look at Spamda's posts number and say right away that he is a spammer and then go around flaming him but that would be wrong because it's prejudice. Just like so many ppl seem to hate DBZ vid's off the bat. (Spamda does have some irrelavent posts under his belt, but hold down the flames.)

I think a good alternative would be ranks or titles. Some forums have this, and I think the forum software would support it. When you reach a certain number of posts (not shown to the public), and have been a member long enough, you get a new rank/title. I think it would block spammer types, since there'd be no point in posting tons of crap all day every day, just to have a higher number than the next guy.

it isnt a BAD thing per se, even if the post count is taken down, there will still be spammers, and more people with nonsense ("hey, look, no post counts, i can go around saying ridiculous things, that dont mean shit"). So in some caes, this might happen, sure spammers, who are looking for recognition do this to be known (not all of em, but im sure at least some) on the post counts, will quit, but it will even out with the "ridiculous people" i mentioned earlier.

It'd be nice if that was what they only did, but you've got people like SpPANDA and R-A-N-M-A who just spam and spam and spam to up their postcount in some online dick comparison contest. SpPANDA's art kind of saves him, and he's cut back apparently, but still...

I do like my idea of ranks based off number of posts and member duration, and I think it would be a practical, interesting alternative to postcounts.

Hmm... I'm not sure ranks or titles would work better. For example:

"Yes! At 1000 posts I have finally gained the title of "Soldier"!

"Pssh, that's nothing man I've been a Captain a long time ago at 1200!"

*Insert condescending sneer* "Lowlifes, I have attained the status of God."

*Heavenly chorus and ominous voice* "Yes... but only I hold the title of Spamda! Bow down before your ruler!"

Soldier, Captain, and God: "Yes, we must all be like Spamda! And spam the whole world in unity!!!"

But it would be more fun :D .

I think ranks based on how long you have been a member and not a combo of that AND post counts would be best. Spamming wouldn't have any effect on your position.

Personally, I don't mind off topic posts about pictures, kittens, avatars and so on...it's the 1 sentence, no revelance to anything posts that are annoying. Would taking away post counts have any effect on that though? I think those kind of posts happen because people are bored and just feel like being seen thus getting attention.

No no, flint, see, the number of posts are not shown. Just the rank. Everyone becomes more equal that way, and there's no postcount competition.

The reason why I think it should be based on postcount and membership duration, Misty, is due to the fact that you'd have newbies, who have posted nothing to little, getting promoted. With postcount also, it shows some involvement in the forum. Maybe the mod(s) or Phade could be in charge of higher ranks exclusively, also. There could be perks, although I'm not sure what.
