Weird Glitch

Postby EarthCurrent » Mon Jul 07, 2003 2:08 am

For the first time, I've been getting a weird glitch on occasion when trying to download locally hosted videos. Most of the time, I click local, I go to to the download screen and I get the little popup window to start the download. Today, though, when I would click local and go to the download screen, a good number of times I suddenly have WMP launch on me and no sign of a DL popup.

Is this a problem on my end?
If so, who might I fix it easily?

It's a problem your end to do with MIME settings.

I'd have written something on how to stop this from happening but I havent found a website that gives a detailed enough answer as it's different on different versions of windows.

Now that I'm done cursing...

It's just odd that it seems so very random. I go in: problems with WMP opening. I come back 4 minutes later to try again...no problems.

Anywho, I'm running Win98se. Is there someplace you might recommend I go for some directions on reading up on how I might fix things.

Yep. It's Microsoft's wonderfull "our users are absolutely too stupid to handle, well, anything" policy. The download server already sends things as application/octet-stream to work around a couple of problems in IE, like it ignoring Content-Disposition (sp?). This causes us people using sane browsers (<a href="http://www.mozilla.org/">Mozilla</a>) on sane platforms (<a href="http://www.debian.org/">Linux</a>, <a href="http://www.apple.com/">Mac</a>, etc.) countless fun.

Maybe switching to mozilla will help. If not, at least you gain the ability to turn off pop up adds, annoying image animations, etc.

/me adds Microsoft to the list of things Excel should treat like the original author.
