Edit/Delete a post

Postby XStylus » Wed Sep 08, 2010 6:51 pm

Is there any particular reason why some conferences here don't have a method for one to edit/delete their own post?

Donators get editing privileges in all forums, I'm not sure which ones are left that don't have it for non-donators, but it seems that every time I turn around another forum has allowed it. Maybe it's just extra incentive to donate?

I think traditionally editing has not been allowed for reasons such as: person 1 says something -> person 2 replies -> person 1 changes what he originally said

Er... really now? Hmm. Can't say I've ever responded positively to services that extort basic functions and call it an "incentive" for something.

That reason I can swallow, but I can't say it's a well reasoned one. If a person posts something in the heat of the moment that makes them look like a jackass (or posts an embarrassing typo), I think they should have the opportunity to correct their momentary lapse of sanity.

Your mistake is in thinking it is basic. Many forums do not allow editing or deletion at all, and many more only allow it for a very short amount of time.

It's not a basic, and it isn't a right. It's a privilege. In some places you automatically receive it, in some places you never have it, in still others you get it for some contribution to the community. Here you get some subforums automatically, others you must contribute to the community (donate) in order to get.

That's hardly extortion.

lol. this is the only forum i visit that doesn't allow editing in all sub forums. isn't the point of donating to help the site, not to be able to edit your posts and gain a sub forum

On the other hand, people can (and have) erase(d) half of an entire discussion "to correct their momentary lapse of sanity", which could prevent users from seeing that their future questions might have already been answered. Changing comments that already have replies generally breeds confusion, and while confusion is great for a laugh, it rarely fosters healthy discussion.

And there are people who leave the community and delete all of their stuff as well.

I'm just gonna throw this out there, your actions have consequences, think about your actions before you act. If you always get a second chance or an undo button, you'll never learn.
