I thought the Relationship Forum was a good idea as a way to let off some steam, even if it started as an April Fools thing...an Intro area could be similarly cathartic, for both old and new members.

In other words, free OT?

Structure. The 'topic' of the Intro area may be broader than some of the other areas, but it does have one, and so long as moderation is kept up to stop it from devolving into OT-lite, we're good. Some of the ideas about time limits might work to that benefit also.

Think more of a 'member interview' section (this could be a good venue for a weekly or quasi-regular interview for long-time members, seeing as that feature on the main site kind of stagnated). Sometimes other forums call such things 'Facing the board'.

IF the person is nice, THEN there might be more willing to check their threads - this works almost everywhere. I was lucky to have met some people in my first thread but others don't have to be so lucky, especially with the constant decrease of readers there (or repliers, maybe)

Also, I want to say hi to new people :>

Saying hi to new people is fine, and should be the reason to have the forum.

I think the reason people were willing to communicate with you is not because you are lucky, but because you chose to participate with the community. I think this will always be the case weather or not we have an intro forum.

That works.

I'd like us to at least try this out for a while and see where it goes. Having posted in intro threads on other boards, it made me feel welcome and got to see how laid back people were. It helped me get into the flow of things.

Don't know if want. I'm not sure I understand why we need it. I'm not necessarily opposed, but I'm clearly not sold on the idea. How will an introduction forum make life easier for the community as a whole? Just wanting to say hi does not seem to be sufficient reason to create an entirely new forum, nor to deal with its possible negatives. There must be some conceptual benefit at least...

Why?

What is the conceptual benefit to "Anime Screencap Forum" or "General Music"
Or even "Anime Series Discussion" if you get right down to it?

I don't understand why
A:People assume the worst about the community and use that as a reason to have the forum, or
B:Assume the worst about the community and use that as a reason against.

I also don't understand why the philosophic burden of proof is on the same level for human experimentation here. I shouldn't need to provide such drastic reasons or empirical proof that having a place to greet newcomers and point them in the directions they need to go might be a nice thing to have.

Because jokes are terrible things and should be avoided at all costs. Comedy is a dying breed for a reason.

You know, this whole thing boils down to this:

Will it hurt the org to have this? No.

Will it help the org to have this? Maybe, maybe not.

If we try it and it doesn't work, can it be easily removed? Yes.

Lets quit all this bullshit arguing and create the stupid forum. If it works, great. If it doesn't work, delete it and move on. Jesus Christ on a dildo, sometimes the org argues about the dumbest shit.

Apparently there used to be a section called "It's all about me!" up to 2003, but it got removed... checking inside it looks like didn't work out too well, although it doesn't seem like it was just about presentations.
I don't really see the need for a presentation sections... but I guess trying wouldn't be troublesome either...
I personally have never been one to see much meaning in the presentation section: I see many people opening their topic there and never showing up again on the actual forum; I'd rather see them show up for the first time in the forum and get to know them by actually seeing them interact in the community. In other words, if one comes here to stick, then a presentation section isn't really needed; if one is here just to put up their presentation and never come over again, then they could have just written that presentation on their org profile and call it a day.
Sure, there really is no harm in the section, but there is no point either... if it's just about saying hi, I'd rather do that on #AMV while getting to know them a bit more actively than in a topic. >_>
But to wrap it up, I'm fine either way. I'm not really against the idea, so whatever the admins will decide is fine by me.

So, free OT basically...

It'll require substantial moderation so that it doesn't turn into that.

Alternatively, if we're cool with free OT, put the other section everyone's bitching about in the other thread on there too. These topics are all baby-stepping towards it as it is.

At the risk of speaking 'officially' (which I'm not in this case), I personally would be just fine with having OT forums again. Perhaps at this stage it's something that ought to be considered. I'm curious if that's what people really want, but to me it doesn't seem like something a lot of members would say no to...
However for obvious reasons that's an administrative decision (and with the recognition that anything that can't be strictly defined as having a topic can get really difficult to moderate or keep in line with community goals - introduction forums are already uncomfortably close to that. Then again, so are the MEP forums).
