Re: Definition of Anime for AMVs - Feedback
I like the rule that allows exceptions for things that are not anime but in the spirit of anime, mainly because I like manga and fanart and all that jazz, and I think most other anime fans enjoy seeing good AMVs made with them. Being overly literal does more harm than good. The rule should be kept and set in stone, since right now the wording is still wishy washy.Vlad G Pohnert wrote:There have been several other media types mentioned by others. In general the above is what is considered to be confirmed as anime, although other sources in the spirit of anime may be used such as original art or printed material (manga), in general these sources are not really anime themselves for the most part. Some of these grey areas we are still debating and will clarify in the near future. We are also looking at updating the rules on the video upload and catalog entry pages to reflect all the above and provide some examples to clarify it to everyone.

We generally allow M@Ds, so what if someone made a M@D like video using entirely original animation?
I think the distinction of limiting it to people who are ethnically Japanese is probably outdated.
Note, that the difference between "anime" and "animation" is an artificial one of Western creation. In Japan, there is little distinction made between 日本のアニメ and 外国のアニメ, Japanese animation and other countries' animation. The same is true for manga. This made initial conversations awkward when I first arrived, as I have never considered Disney films to be "anime" or Superman to be "manga." The Japanese make no such distinction.

Sadly for us, we are not Japanese, I suppose about 99% of this site, actually :<

My point is that non-Japanese produce animation and comics that are almost identical to anime and manga, style wise. Avatar and Teen Titans aren't really, but something like the work of Rivkah, who has been published IN JAPAN (but is an American from Austin), obviously blurs the lines...

We already know that Japanese anime studios work with hired Koreans mainly. And?

Kionon, Where are you going with this? Are you saying we should allow everything in, or not bother trying to apply logic and reason to the decision making process because we're hypocrites for not applying it in all cases?

The second.
I don't advocate the use of everything. If I had my druthers, I would allow non-Japanese manga-ka and animators where if you didn't know any better, you would assume that the person was a Japanese artist.
Rivkah, Tavi, Jan Scott Frazier, Christopher Butler all come to mind...

The second would imply arbitrary rules with a "because we say so" reasoning though. Granted, that is what we had before... Too much democracy infecting the org?
