Members Main Page Revised

Postby Phade » Thu Apr 08, 2004 12:04 am

Hey All,

The members main page has been revised using XHTML and CSS standards. The inspiration for this came from www.csszengarden.com where "skinning the site" is taken to a whole new level. In addition to the "cool" factor, the re-coding of the page has dropped the size of the page to 1/6th of the <a href="/members/members_main_old.php">original coding</a>, making for faster page loads and less bandwidth used.

The design has been tested with major browsers on multiple platforms. However, Opera users are currently saying, "WTF??" There are a few know issues that only affect the Opera browser. If you can come up with a solution that fixes the Opera issues and still works for other browsers by modifying <a href="/skins/v3/1/style.css">the CSS</a> file only, please let me know and I'll put in the fix. No updates to the HTML code should be necessary.

Eventually, you guys will be set loose on the site to manipulate it as you see fit. First, though, the rest of the site needs to be converted. If you are interested in helping out with getting the current design into CSS form, please let me know. Basically what you will be doing is creating the CSS to the updated pages to match the current default design. Check the new member main page source code and CSS to see what you'll be getting into.

As always, thanks again and have fun!! ^_^

Agreed on all fronts. It's really nice to be able to customize with the css ^_^

I'm glad to see you streamline the whole setup a bit, too. It's always nice to simplify and speed up access.

I just went there with Opera (my default browser) and it looks great. A few things didn't line up, prolly cause of the problems you explained earlier.

Note to self: learn CSS so I can customize my own page, hehe...

The thing I noticed as an Opera user is that my old skin doesn't work on the member page but it does work everywhere else. Since I love Devolution's skin "The Blue 2: Lighter Blue" I might end up switching browsers... the only thing I hate about that is I have a lot of bookmarks.

Hey Corran Productions,

The new skin system is completely incompatable with the old one. This means that none the old skins will work no matter what browser you use. They will have to be recreated for the new system. Sorry...

That's alright, I guess I can try to recreate it or maybe devolution will. He seems to have a series of them so he might make another.

Well I'm working on it right now. Trying to spruce it up, make it a little nicer though. It's not gunna be exactly the same as before... but pretty similar.

I've been playing around a little with the css file and I haven't been able to find how to fix that problem in Opera. I also noticed this while skinning and couldn't find a way to fix it. As you can see in this picture below in the far right column, the dark blue color doesn't fill the entire box and even leaves spaces between some of the lines. I've noticed this in Opera and Internet Explorer.

Corran: try adding a "background-color" tag into the "#subinfo ul {" line.
