*sigh* Premiere, why hast thou forsaken me...

Er, sorry if that offended anyone...

Anyhow, I went through ErMac's guide to editing AVS files in Premiere, and got through all his steps just fine. The only problem is, when I try to view the AVS file, it just displays the whole clip as a filled orange box. I did all the "square pixel" steps and stuff, and resized the monitor window and clip view window to 720x480, and tried opening the AVS file in Windows Media Player, which did display it correctly, just quite choppy. I'm quite confused at this point, as this isn't mentioned in the guide or anywhere that I saw in the forums...

did you choose YUV in dvd2avi?

I think this problem occurs if you've chosen RGB by mistake. If you want to test it out, try adding:

ConverttoYUY2

to your script and see if it helps - if not check your dvd2avi settings again.

This... is... odd. I tried doing as you suggested, and inserted the line in my AVS file. Premiere said it didn't know what that instruction meant, so I took it out of the AVS to double-check my original file, and it seems to work now. Anyhow, thanks for the advice ^_^

Okay, sorry to bring that back up to the top, but I have narrowed down the problem a bit. Video plays fine in Premiere if I don't have the following lines in my AVS file:

LoadPlugin("C:\DVD\Decomb\Decomb.dll")
Telecide()
Decimate(5)

They're straight from ErMac's guide, so I don't see why it doesn't work. If I take those lines out, then Premiere will read the file correctly and display the right video, but if those lines are included in the AVS file, Premiere just shows a filled orange screen where the video should be. Any help would be much appreciated.

um... do you actually have the decomb plugin or did you just put the lines into your file without actually getting it?

*sigh* I don't think i'm that much a newbie ^_^

I do have the Decomb dll, and the text does point to the right place.

well, see there's nothing wrong with those decomb settings which made me think you might not have actually downloaded it.

There's no reason why it shouldn't work with the decomb stuff - especially if it works in media player.

Ja, this is the AVS file in its entirety (sans lines):

-------------------
LoadPlugin("C:\DVD\MPEG2DEC\MPEG2DEC.dll")
MPEG2Source("C:\DVD\OSRips\OutlawStar.d2v")
LoadPlugin("C:\DVD\Decomb\Decomb.dll")
Telecide()
Decimate(5)
--------------------

All paths lead to the correct places, and I do have all dll and d2v files.

I'm afraid I'm at a loss.

I cant see any reason why that shouldnt work - especially if it works without the decomb stuff.

I dont have any trouble using decomb avs files in premiere - I'm not sure I know how I can help, sorry.

Okay, I have given up on AviSynth. I'm trying VirtualDub to deinterlace from the AVS file, but no matter what codec I use, VirtualDub's preview feature always estimates the end file size around 40 gig! Am I doing something wrong, or is this normal? I've tried using various and sundry codecs, with the same result or larger. Do I just not have a good codec? Most of my tests have been with Huffyuv and DivX. Does anyone know which codec has the absolute best compression? I'm very sorry if this has been discussed. I looked through the forums and guides for an answer, and ErMac's guide told me a lot about the codecs, but not which would give the smallest file size.

Just deinterlace the stuff after you've edited the video, that's what the guide suggests.

There's not a great deal of use making an avi file for editing with when you can use the vobs - you'll just add another lossy compression.

If the avisynth vobs work interlaced in premiere then edit it interlaced and export interlaced and use virtualdub or tmpeg's IVTC to get rid of the interlacing later.

I'll still have to use a codec for compression/deinterlacing after i've edited it... so the "which codec" question still stands.
