Need help with Windows Movie Maker.

Postby Lou-chan » Mon Oct 23, 2006 10:49 am

I've wanted to make an AMV, parody clips and other random stuff out of the movie Adolescence of Utena which I recently managed to get my hands on.
The movie is about one and a half hour long and is split up into two parts, both AVI.
The strange thing is...
I can import the second part into Windows Movie Maker but not the first part. I just get this message as soon as I try:

D:\Lou\BitComet\Downloads\[anime_fin]_Utena\[anime_fin]_Adolescence_of_Utena_CD1_DVDRiP.avi gick inte att importera. Odefinierat fel

Translated from Swedish to English is would mean something like "failed to be imported. Unidentified problem."
What's wrong? How do I fix it? Can I fix it?

Your clips are probally encoded in xvid or divx. Most editing programs don't work well with those formats. You need to encode them with a codc like Hufftuv.

I have no idea, but: Please forgett about WMM it is only a crapy thing for nothing.
If you don´t want to buy or "get" an other better programm you can use other freeware stuff like:
http://www.jahshaka.org/

But plz no WMM ;_;

Also: DVD Footage brings much better quality than fansub episodes.

It's not fansubbed, it's DVD RAW.
And I don't really mind buying a better "AMV-making" program.
But I have no idea what I should get that is as easy to use and understand.

Oh yeah,
When you get another editing program you are still gonna have to convert your clips with a different codec...

[Anime Fin RAWS] = Divx or Xvid

This problem is common across ALL video editing programs, so don't feel like you need to get a new one right away. Like moonie said, check the codec, and if it's DivX or XviD then you're going to have problems and you're going to have to re-encode your clips.

WMM is not a bad program to get started on; the only real problems it has are stability issues. If those would get fixed then I'd probably go back to using it every now and then. But don't underestimate WMM; some pretty freakin' cool videos have been made with it.

I haven't had any problems (fingers crossed) working with XviD in MEP 10+, but I've been accessing the files via AviSynth scripts. Don't know whether or not that makes a difference.

I'd recommend Magix for a starting program. The basic stuff is all drag-and-drop and it's easy to add pics, video clips, and fancy (ie. cheesy :P ) transitions and effects. The advanced stuff is tucked away in the context menus, and while this makes the program less overwhelming at first it makes not learning the main keyboard shortcuts a bad idea.

Yeah it does. Avisynth does all the decoding so the editing program doesn't fall over itself. Makes it slow sometimes though.

Ah, thanks. Didn't want to make an 'AviSynth solves your DivX / XviD woes!' post without knowing for sure that it was AviSynth keeping the frames straight.

I agree. Just because you can start smoking, doesn't mean it's good to start smoking...
