That's why I've been doing. Often using the alpha layered targa's of the mouth positions in Premiere so I can get them working, then export an alpha layered Lagarith to use in After Effects and make a composition with the character, his motions and matching lip motions.

That's a very good method, especially if you happen to have movement on the background. Otherwise the background gets all weird and choppy.
