What kind of audio is it? Most editing programs can have problems with audio that is compressed, i.e. MP3, AAC (MP4, M4A, 3GP, etc), WMA, and so forth. It is highly recommended to only use uncompressed PCM WAV audio files in your editing programs. You may have to re-rip your audio from the CD without compression or convert the audio to a WAV file.
Having trouble playing back videos? I recommend: Image

Then you have to use an audio converter to change them into .wav files.
You can use winamp for that

Its best to use .wav files though.
Mp3's can cause problems in editing programs especially if they are VBR

Make sure your clips are not compressed with Xvid or Divx. That causes most editing programs to crash.
