video file saved with virtualdub doesn't play smoothly, why?

Postby jhning » Sat Sep 16, 2006 11:27 pm

i tried to remove the subtitle using virtualdub null transform. but apparently the file doesn't play smoothly after i save in under full processing mode and compress it under huggyuv v1.3.1. why??

also if i save my WMM file (under DV AVI option ) then i remove the subtitle, it doesn't load because
-'couldn't locate decompressor for format'dvsd' unknown
-AVI type 1 DV file detected.

when i tried to install pvdcodec to solve the problem (i read it from other post) er i showed something like"sound video game controllor has not passed windows logo testing to verify its compatability with windoes XP. continuing the installation of this software may impair or destabilise the correct operation of you system......etc"

Because HuffYUV files are not meant for playback. They're huge files, and you shouldn't expect to be able to play them back smoothly most of the time.

Also, you really should upgrade to HuffYUV 2.1.1.

Windows XP says that about everything. Install it anyway.

thanks =)
but umm i'm kinda confused. if "HuffYUV files are not meant for playback
" then why do i compress it under HuffYUV ?

ok lets say i wanna remove the subs after i finish the amv using WMM. so that means i save the file under DV AVI option then open it with virtualdubmod (which couldn't detect the audio), insert the audio under streams and save it as what kinda files?? avi or HuffYUV or what?

sorry i think i read too much subtitles issue posts that i kinda got confused. haha

I haven't used HuffYUV myself but that is one of the main codecs people use because it is looseless.

The stuttery playback usually isn't a problem of the filesize. Even an UDMA-33 drive should be fast enough. The decoding algorithm is very CPU-intensive, so either the CPU is too weak or too many processes are running during playback.

Because it's an lossless codec. It avoids further losses during editing/processing, and it's easier to use for editing programs because every frame is a keyframe.

First, avi is a container, not a video format. Didn't you notice that the HuffYUV are avi either? After exporting it as DV-AVI from WMM you can convert it directly in your distribution format (for e.g. XVID) with VirtualDub. The HuffYUV clips you should make from your sources before editing. That way you can do some cleanup either. Since you ask for removing subtitles afterwards I hope you don't edit with XVID/DIVX or similar compressed fansubs.

oh.. i don't quite get what you mean entirely ( i didn't know avi is a container not a format =x) but anyway i solved the problem.
thanks a lot! :D
i experiment by saving the file under DivX 6.0 but the quality seem to decrease by a little. what is the best format to save the file under?

Try to compress with XviD. It's free of spyware. Deinstall DivX before installing XviD.

Better results you can get with a h.264 codec like x.264. But since it has to be in a MP4 or MKV container you cant use VirtualDub for compression, and in addition you'll get much more complaints "I can't play the video" than with XviD in AVI.

Really? I had always been under the impression that it required rather less CPU time than the distro codecs. Well, thank you, now I finally know why. :)

I'll give you some numbers to show that HuffYUV needs that much CPU power and that, in additon, it depends very much on the player that is used.

I have an AMD Athlon XP-M 2600+ with 1 GB DDR-RAM, running Win2K. The CPU-load is measured with the task manger.

If I run a 512x384 23,976 FPS HuffYUV with 16 bit 44.1kHz PCM audio in WMP 6.4, the CPU-load floats the most time around 35%, with peaks up to 45%. The same file as DivX with 1000kBit/s and MP3 160kBit CBR usually floats around 25% with peaks up to 35%. A 720x480 24 fps HuffYUV causes between 66% and 75% CPU load.

With VLC 0.85 the differences become much worse. The 512x384 Huffy causes between 65 and 75% load, while the DivX needs that less power that the most time is shown 0% load, with peaks up to 3%. The 720x480 24fps Huffy causes 100% load, leading into lags.
