WMM and VirtualDubMod

Postby 8bit_samurai » Sun Sep 10, 2006 2:55 am

I'm having trouble trying to open a .wmv file and .avi file created by WMM with VirtualDubMod. When I try to open the .wmv file, it says something about Microsoft and a patent and a ASF file and a bunch of other stuff. I know I'm screwed on that part since there's something about a copyright infringement, but when I save it as a .avi file, all it says is something about fourcc and a dvsd. Is there anyway to get around that part like using avisynth or something, or am I screwed all together (in opening any type of video created by WMM with VirtualDubMod)?

Install a DV decoder. One popular one is Panasonic's; a search for "Panasonic DV codec" will turn up several download sites.

Oh, by the way, patents aren't the same thing as copyrights.

Sorry it said patent infringements not copyright infringements. Is there anyplace specific to put it? Right now it's in Virtualdubmod folder but now it says
VirtualDub Warning wrote:Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dvsd' (unknown). VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, is not suitable. Only 'Direct stream copy' is available for this video.
AVI: Type-1 DV file detected -- VirtualDub cannot extract audio from this type of itherleaved stream.

and at the moment I'm also downloading DJBCP Codec Pack 5.1.0.1 if that helps with anything.

fix'd sorry about that and for double posting. Well, after downloading and installing the DJBCP Codec Pack 5.1.0.1 I couldn't directly open the file, but I have used the DivX converter to convert it, change the compression and, altough it is a bit sluggish, I think it will do for now, unless someone has any better suggestions.

The fourcc code 'dvsd' is an identifier for DV.

You didn't need to install a gigantic codec pack (which will probably end up screwing you over later) just for this. (Installation instructions are also on that page.)

Though, that wouldn't really have helped anyway if you wanted to recover both audio and video, since it's not really convenient to work with DV type-1 files in VfW based applications like VirtualDubMod. For that, Avisynth may work better:

Code: Select all
DirectShowSource("file.avi")

Thanks. You just saved me a whole bunch of time and space. I believe the installation of the (Panasonic) codec works better than the avisynth, the avisynth file is a bit sluggish like the divx file. That wouldn't happened to be caused by a slow processor or low memory? With the codec it just has no audio, which I'm not really concerned right now, I just want to overlay some scenes, and with the WMM fade isn't all that I'm looking for, since the opacity changes and makes it more like a flash overlay than a solid one. I found out how to do the overlay with avisynth which I'm hoping for better results than the usual WMM fade. And hopefully once I'm done with the AMV I was thinking of converting it to an .avi with the xvid codec and hopefully I'll have it figured out by then. Thanks again.
