Virtual Dub + WMV9 audio = Whatta?

Postby Radical_Yue » Sun Aug 20, 2006 4:06 am

Okay, I have some footage...that isn't exaclty DVD ripped to say the least (let's leave it at that)

Each time I try to open it up in Virtual Dub Mod, I get popups saying someting about WMV9 yadda yadda crap, and it refuses to load correctly.

It would help if you specified exactly what the error was, and what you're trying to load into it.

"Yadda yadda crap" is not useful information. "Couldn't locate decompressor", or whatever, is.

i dont recall if vdub opens wmv files or not... but its prolly a case of you trying to convert a wmv file... which is pretty much a waste...

No, sorry, my brain was at an even lower functioning rate than usual when I made this -___- It's been a long day.

I'm not trying to open a WMV file, I know that V dub + WMV = Sorry, it won't work.

Okay here is what happens exactly, I go to open a file and this pops up:

VirtualDub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file (audio stream 1). The current preference is to rewrite the audio header in standard CBR values during processing for better compatibility. This may introduce up to 14321 ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unexceptable, decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed WAV file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder. (bitrate: 165.3 = 21.8kbps)

Do you still want to rewrite the header?

Yes or No?

-------------------------------------------

Then whether I click yes or no, this pops up:

VirtualDub Warning-

Couldn't locate the decompressor format for 'WMV3' (unknown).
VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows [VFW] compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable. Only 'Direct stream copy' is available for this video.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

What in the world does all this mean? 0.o I'm sorry, I'm a complete moron, and welcome the much needed bashing. I've taken the easy road of just rendering in WMV format and using crappy footage for so long, that this is all overloading my small insuficient brain...

Sorry for the trouble, but could you please explain, or send me to a guide that I missed (since I'm a blind loser)???

Thanks ^_^;;;

It means that someone evil has put a Window Media 9 format 8Identifies with FourCC WMV3) in an AVI container. Get the Windows Media encoder and you should be able to handle this.

Open up the file with DirectShowSource().

And yes, WMV + AVI = EVIL. And it looks like you also have VBR audio, so WMV + VBR audio + AVI = I have no word to describe the evilness.

The first message means that the file you have contains variable bitrate audio, and that it was incorrectly written into the AVI. The second message just means that no Video for Windows decompressor for the particular format you're trying to open exists. (On Windows, there are two major frameworks for video: Video for Windows and DirectShow. The latter is more modern, but VirtualDub uses the former.)

DirectShowSource through Avisynth should allow you to handle the file. If that doesn't work, and you don't really care about keeping the audio and video synchronized (which isn't always an unsolvable problem -- stripping out the audio, maybe transcoding it, and then reattaching it usually works) you can try some stuff with GraphEdit to create a filter graph that will take in Windows Media video and output it as something more workable, like HuffYUV or uncompressed video.

What happens if you just try to load a script containing

Code: Select all
Version()
?

Uh huh....

When I try to load the "Version()" script, Vdub goes boom. In other words, it "encounters an error" and it shuts down.

I think I may just have to give up on this footage...or I'll bug the hell outta JaddziaDax when she get's back home xD After all, she is the one who gave me the place that she got from Koop.

So thank you so much for you help. Now, I'm going to go drive JaddziaDax and Koopiskeva krazy ^_^

No, wait, don't give up!

Do you really need the audio? If not, killaudio() will solve your problem. If so, then stick to your original plan.

The 'WMV3' FourCC is used by content encoded with the WMV9 VCM codec. You can download it here, directly from Microsoft's website:

The link for it from Microsoft

Once you've installed that, you don't need AviSynth to pipe the video into VDub.

The audio thing can be 'solved' in a sense by selecting 'no', and then (in VirtualDubMod) going to Streams->Stream list, and telling it to Demux. You can then try to put the audio back in by selecting Add... and selecting the mp3 you just demuxed. Make sure to select the existing audio stream and then click Disable, though.

That error comes up sometimes on CBR streams which were incorrectly muxed into AVI, and that little method I described will do it correctly. As far as I know, VBR streams will always throw that error. I don't know if ABR streams will, though.
