Windows Movie Maker stops working!

Postby Melyanna88 » Tue Aug 15, 2006 4:39 am

Yes that's right... I import a file, and then when I move clips to the timeline the program gets weird. Sometimes it stops working as soon as I've moved the clip, sometimes it does when I try to make the clip smaller (to get just a few seconds or so of it), sometimes it stops working when I'm trying to preview what I've added. It's so annoying, because it means I'll never be able to finish any video at all!!

I've read through the posts on here to see if there's anything that could help me. I've installed the latest xvid codec, and cccp. None of those helped me. WMM continues to just stop working so I have to shut it down...

Please, is there anyone who has any more ideas what I could do? I can't afford buying an other better editing software, and now I'm getting desperate - it's been like this for months!

Are the files DivX/XviD?

WMM hates these codecs, and so do most other editing programs. Save your clips in Huffyuv and import them in WMM. It should work fine. Here's what you do:

1. Download VirtualDubMod

2. Download and install Huffyuv

3. Open your files in VirtualDubMod and go to File>Save As...

4. On the bottom of the save window, there should be a box that reads "Uncompressed RGB". Click the button next to it and select Huffyuv from the list that pops up.

5. Save the file. You can't save it over the original file.

6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 for every other video file you intend to use

7. Import the new Huffyuv files in WMM

Thank you, I tried that. But, it still doesn't work. :(
Some of the files I could open in virtualdub, but when I tried to open one of them I got the message:

"Couldn't locate decompressor form format 'DIV3' (Microsoft High-Speed MPEG-4 V3 [Hack: DivX Low-Motion]). VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable. Only 'Direct stream copy' is available for this video."

What does it mean, and what do I have to do??

Plus, of some reason I can't even import files into WMM any longer, it stops working there already now! :(

...um... wow. Whatever it is you're trying to import is like... encoded... poorly... using a hacked codec... wow.

Well, if CCCP's up to the challenge (and you have AVISynth) you can try this.

Open VirtualDubMod. Go to the Open File dialog. See the drop-down menu in the bottom-left that says [None]? Change it to DirectShowSource. Now open the file you're trying to open.

If it doesn't work, ya might be shit outta luck.

If it does work, you'll find yourself with a timeline. As far as VirtualDub is concerned, it is raw, uncompressed frames. So you can't direct-stream-copy. Make some HuffYUV clips, then import those into WMM.

I'm giving up... I've downloaded both CCCP and AVISynth, but when I open VirtualDubMod, I can find only [none] in that dropdown menu, nothing about DirectShowSource.

Thanks for your help anyway.

Does it work if you use a manually created script? That is:

DirectShowSource("[file path]")

Type that into Notepad and save it as [filename].avs
You need to specify the extension or Notepad will save it as [filename].txt, which isn't what you want.

Also, how are you trying to open it? 'Open video file' isn't suitable here. You need 'Open video file via AviSynth'. That creates a basic avs file that points to the file you're trying to open, and VDM loads that instead of the video file. It doesn't matter if it throws an error, as you can bring up the Script Editor and correct the script yourself.

I have a file like this.

...drop-down menu. That means you click it. And it opens. And there's directshowsource in it.

In VirtualDubMod. I dunno about VirtualDub.

Good luck anyways. Would hate to see ya give up before you even try a script, though. -_-

I can't find the 'Open video file via AviSynth'. :( I don't know if I have the "correct" version of VirtualDubMod, or if something went wrong while I installed it or AVISynth...

Ok I managed to make it work with AVISynth. But somehow the video is turned upside down when I play it?! :? But when I pause the video, it turns the right way again... And when I import the clips to WMM they ae turned the right way also...

*wants an edit button*

Ok, it works to make clips in VirtualDubMod (even though the video is upside down while I'm playing it, as before). And it works to import them to WMM.
Thank you all for your help with this, I couldn't have made it work without you! *really thankful*

But now there's another problem. :( After I've added a few clips in WMM, along with the music, I can't add more clips! WMM shuts down, without any error message or anything like that!
Does anyone know why that happens? Has it to do with how much memory I have on my computer, or harddrive space, or whatever? I don't know what to do!

WMM likes to crash frequently. If the music is in mp3, it would be a good idea to use a wav file instead. Rip a wav from your CD or convert the mp3 file with BeSweet or dBpowerAMP.

Ok thanks. There was a codec that WMM didn't like.. Anyway, it doesn't crash anylonger.
But still, in VirtualDubMod, the picture is like mirrored and upside down. Anyone who has an idea about why that's so?? :?

I cannot even begin to imagine why, especially if when you create clips they're the right way up.

Maybe there's something in the AVS script...? No, that would reach the output...

...I have no idea. I've never seen that before. ^o.o^ I guess it's one of those, "I don't know why, but at least it works right in the editor" things.

I had a problem like that a while ago... I think it was with Lagarith clips (using the version that came with the AMVApp), and they were all funky-coloured as well. It played fine if I went through the frames manually and it always encoded without problems, so I think it's just an issue with VDM's preview mode.

Cinepak also does that (Cinepak is the Devil) but when you re-encode it into something non-satanic it turns back the right way. Mind that youy should only re-encode when the source is losslessly encoded.
